Description
Martel and I were walking through the halls of Chaos High. The final bell had rung and school was over for the day. It was a Wednesday, and we were all awaiting the chaos of school the next day. Martel and I were talking when something caught my eye. There was a poster on the wall that said "School Musical Auditions on Thursday". The musical was going to be based on High School Musical, so that was going to be interesting.
"Oh my gosh, Martel! I have to do that!" I said, jumping up and down. Martel gave me a weird look, and I remembered I had never told her I like to be in plays.
"Sorry, I just…"
"Well, if it's that important to you, I'll do it with you," she said. That surprised me! Martel didn't seem to be the acting type, and I had never heard her sing, so it was nice of her to do this with me.
"Thanks, Mar," I said, hugging her awkwardly. I tugged the poster off the wall and stuffed it in my backpack.
"Do you think I'll get the lead?" I asked.
"I don't know. Ask the director," Martel said smartly. I slugged her shoulder as we walked the rest of the way to our house.

Once we got home, I ran up to my room and grabbed my cell phone. I clicked Shadow's name on the "Speed Dial" list and waited for him to pick up.
"Hey. This is Shadow," he answered.
"Hi! I've got some good news," I said.
"Oh, hi Aryn. What?" he asked.
"I'm going to audition for the school play!" I said excitedly.
Silence.
"Um… Shadow?" I asked into the receiver.
"Oh, yeah. I'm still here. I just didn't think you LIKED being in front of a huge crowd of people," he said finally.
"There's a lot about me you don't know, Shadz," I said teasingly. I could tell he was rolling his eyes.
"So, do you want to audition too?" I asked. A stunned silence overcame the phone again.
"Uhm… no…" he said nervously.
"Oh come on, Shadz! It'd be fun!" I said, trying to convince him.
"Absolutely not," he replied stubbornly.
"You might get Troy and I might get Gabriella! And guess what, Shadow…"
"What?"
"There's a kissing scene… and we have to practice it… every day…"
Stunned silence again. "Um… I… I guess I could give it a shot…" Shadow said, and I could feel him blushing through the phone.
"Great! See you on Friday!" I said, hanging up before he could change his mind.

It seemed like forever until Friday rolled around. After the final bell rang, I raced down to the auditorium and sat in my seat for auditions. The director, Mr. Brown, was there taking roll.
"Sally?" he called out into the crowd.
"Here!" a voice peeped up. He checked her name off the list and continued down the row.
"Gabby?"
"Here!"
"Simon?"
"Present!"
"Nathan?"
"Here!"
"Sonic?"
Wait… WHAT?!
"HEEEEEEEERE!!" he said loudly. Martel and I face palmed.
"Aryn?"
"Here!" I chimed.
"Martel?" he asked.
Martel just raised her hand shyly, not wanting to make a sound. He nodded at her and checked her off the list.
"Aidyn?" he asked.
Oh… NOW I see why Sonic auditioned…
"Present," she said.
"Shadow?"
We heard a snore come from the back of the room. "Whu-… What? Oh! Here!" he said, his sleep interrupted. Mr. Brown gave him a questioning look before continuing.
"And Phoenix?"
PHOENIX TOO?! I saw Martel about jump out of her skin beside me.
"H-here," he said nervously. I noticed that Shadow and Phee were sitting next to each other in the back row.
"Alright! That's it! You're all here!" Mr. Brown said with satisfaction. He closed his folder and placed it on the stage behind him.
"Okay, first up, I have Sally and Gabby auditioning as a pair," he said, motioning for the two of them to get on stage.
I listened to them for about 5 seconds before I got distracted. I turned around to face Shadow, who had gone back to sleep. I rolled my eyes and coughed really loud on purpose. Shadow's head shot straight up and I tried to keep in my laughter. I waved at him and he winked at me. He pointed to the chair next to him and put his arm around an invisible girl. I rolled my eyes again and shook my head. His face filled with disappointment as Phoenix tried to comfort him. I winked at him before turning back around. Gabby and Sally had finished their audition piece and were walking off stage.
"Up next is Aryn and Martel," Mr. Brown said, turning around in his spinny chair to face us. I saw Martel's face go pale white and started to think that her auditioning wasn't that good of an idea. We stepped onto the stage and sang our song. We chose to sing "Animal I Have Become" by Three Days Grace, and once we finished singing everyone clapped politely. Except for Shadow who was whistling and shouting "GO ARYN" at the top of his lungs. I saw Phoenix trying to get Shadow to shut up, and that made Martel and I laugh.
"Up next, Sonic and Aidyn!" Mr. Brown said, motioning for the two of them to get on stage. I had never seen Sonic so nervous in my entire life. His arms were shaking and his ears were drooping. Aidyn looked so confident compared to him, and I had to laugh. Sonic gave me the evil eye as he passed by. They stepped onto the stage and the beginning of "Live Life" started to play.
"Aww! I love this song!" I said, waiting for them to start singing. I saw Sonic take a huge, deep breath as he prepared to sing his opening solo. When the cue came, Sonic started to sing.
"Take a look inside your heart. What seemed fair today, tomorrow it may not…"
I had NEVER. EVER. Thought that Sonic could sing. Martel and I exchanged shocked looks, then I turned back to Shadow who was staring at Sonic with his mouth open, and Phoenix was just dumb founded.
After Sonic's few lines Aidyn started to sing.
"So many ways that you can try to forget. So many ways you'll find you'll wake up to regret…"
But everyone was still distracted by Sonic's sudden talent.
"Thank you," Mr. Brown said when they finished. Sonic walked off the stage, looking at the ground. As he passed by me on the way back to his seat, I hit his arm and looked at him with total disbelief. How could he not tell me?
"Shadow and Phoenix, you're up," Mr. Brown said, calling the two guys up on the stage. The two of them walked awkwardly up onto the stage while Martel and I giggled at them.
"Hey there, everybody!" Shadow said when he got onto the stage, making the whole cast laugh. Phoenix nudged him with his elbow, and whispered something about being professional through gritted teeth. Shadow nodded and got a way-too-serious look on his face.
"Start the music," he said, looking off into distant space. I rolled my eyes and waited for the disaster to unfold. The 6th grader working the stereo clicked the play button, and the beginning to a very familiar song played.
"Oh lord, no," Martel said, covering her eyes.
"They're taking the Hobits to Isengard!! They're taking the Hobits to Isengard!!" Phoenix and Shadow sang. It took all of my will power not to laugh.
The director was obviously enjoying himself, because he was smiling ear to ear.
Finally, Mr. Brown told Shadow and Phoenix to stop, and everyone clapped. Martel and I were laughing so hard I thought I would die.
"Thank you for that… interesting performance," Mr. Brown said as they walked off the stage. Shadow sat next to me instead of in the back row and Phoenix sat next to Martel, not making eye contact.
"What was that?" I asked Shadow.
"That was the only song that Phee and I both knew," Shadow said, putting his arm around me.
"I know you both know it, but I didn't think you'd sing a song you sing when you're drunk onstage!" I said laughing. Phoenix blushed and wouldn't look at Martel. Sonic looked at Shadow with a strange expression on his face.

After all the auditions had ended, Mr. Brown announced he'd put the cast list outside his classroom door on Monday.
Mr. Brown dismissed us and the 6 of us shot up out of our seats at the same time and we met up outside the auditorium.
"What the hell!?" we all said at once when we got out of ear shot of the teacher.
"Look who's talking, Legolas!" Sonic said at Shadow and Phoenix.
"Well, you never told us you can sing!" I said back at him. Sonic blushed and stopped talking.
"God, Mozart. What is it with you and music?" Martel asked him.
Sonic just shrugged his shoulders.
"I'm full of surprises," he said, smirking.
"Why did YOU audition, Phoenix?" I asked, kind of knowing the answer already.
He glanced at Martel nervously. "I… I think it'd be… a good experience…" he lied. Martel took his hand, trying to comfort him. He smiled shyly, and she did the same.
"Aww. How cute," Shadow said, putting his arm around me. Martel gave him the evil eye before letting go of Phoenix's hand.
"So. Who's gonna get Troy and Gabriella?" Sonic said, trying to change the subject.
"I dunno," Shadow said. "Let's just hope that nothing gets awkward," he continued.

But, he jinxed it.
