Description
Pan eyed Sebastian for a while. How much time passed when she did -five minutes, ten?- she had no idea. All she did know was Sebastian would let her finish before he went on. Already, in her head, she was running through all the possible questions he could ask her. Nothing bad occurred to her during the process and imagining that she refocused her eyes to talk. “Ask away,” she said, pulling her toiletries tighter. Sebastian sighed and suddenly his hand was curling one of Pan’s fallen pieces of hair from her pony tail. Oops. Pan’s eyes narrowed and the second they did Sebastian’s hand snapped back to his side.
“I was wondering if you would like to be my girlfriend…?” His voice was so soft. Pan’s jaw dropped and she starred up at him speechless. Sebastian tensed, putting his hands out in front of him in a calming motion. “I do not need an answer right this second, Pan. I just need to get that question out of my head!” He told her softly his expression going sad and helpless like a lost puppy.
Pan looked down, her eyes darting back and forth as she pondered once more. “Time, yeah…I need time.” She pushed past him then, speed-walking back to her room and slipping behind it in seconds. Sebastian sighed, his back still to the door Pan had disappeared into. He turned after a few minutes of thought thinking how stupid he was to throw that question on his little friend in such a short time. What happened if he had ruined their friendship?! She probably doesn’t even feel the same way, he thought as he turned around to return to E. Ripmav. But as he did he saw Pan coming back out from her room, coat and shoes on. “Walk with me and convince me why I should,” Pan said timidly.
“You are the only one who lets me be myself on a regular basis…” Sebastian murmured as he walked beside her on the forest path that concealed the university.
“I am?” Pan asked confused. Sebastian stopped walking, but Pan continued on not realizing that he did.
“Yeah…around humans I must push myself to seem normal.”
“But my friends during the summer-”
“Even around them. But you…”
Pan realized he wasn’t there anymore and she swung around. Sebastian stood half crouched, ready to pounce. “Oh I see how it is!” Pan growled. Night was a time when she got overly tired -this time of night anyways- and became hyper. That’s why she matched his position for the first time in a VERY long time. Sebastian stood back up, chuckling. “Do you see? You are different than the others…”
Pan bounced back to her feet. “That’s because I’m weird…I do things like that,” Pan explained, trying to get rid of her roseing cheeks. Sebastian appeared beside her, again so close to her face and watching it. How he wished to be able to do that for the rest of his life. He ran the back of his icy fingers down her cheek, leaving her skin tingling where he touched it. Her eyes closed to the touch quickly only to break back open as she cooled down. Pan looked up to his sad and pleading eyes.
“And that,” Sebastian breathed. “There is always that feeling available. Whenever you please Pan. Always.”
Pan turned her face from him, looking to the ground and still pondering; an wishing she could stop her mind and heart from racing. “You’re my best friend…” Pan whispered, still looking to the ground.
She opened the door to her room as quietly as she could, not knowing if Naomi was already asleep or in study mode. “Where’ve you been?” Naomi asked.
Pan looked over to Naomi’s bed where she was reading a book from the Twilight Series; so she was actually having one more night of freedom. “Out,” Pan said.
“Out where?”
“Out.” Pan locked her gaze to Naomi’s for a moment, not blinking; wild dogs looked as if they lay behind them. She didn’t want to talk about it tonight of all nights. Naomi cringed away, shivering slightly. That stare always got her.
“Are you staying up?” Naomi asked.
“Nah…” Pan snapped her fingers then and her cat emerged from under her bed and meowed. “I’m going to go to sleep. Night.”
“Night.”
Morning after morning was the same after that night. Sebastian would come in the early hours of sunrise to not only awake Pan, but Naomi, Selene and Rox as well; Jeremy would retrieve Nallely and Marlie from their beds at this time. As a group they would sit together in the far corner of the cafeteria with Warren who had carved his initials into the wooden table with a paring-knife during the second week of school.
Everyone’s schedule seemed to coincide so they were able to eat lunch together at 1:20pm every day. At 6:00pm they would gather together and eat as well, laughing over whatever had happened to them throughout the day. People would stare at them during those hours wondering how come the modest girls were seated with very handsome young men. Jeremy told them they were all jealous and this made Selene cackle, reminding her of Twilight, of course.
Upon one day, Patrick the pizza boy showed up and Selene and Rox invited him to eat with them. This time he was in regular clothing and the hair they saw him have the nights they ordered pizza was no longer shaggy but spiked up in a good layer of gel. Patrick had asked them why they sit so far from everyone else in the room and Selene’s reply, jokingly, was “We’re secretly the Cullen Family. Jacob Black is just here along for the ride”; Jacob Black being Warren. Patrick pretended her knew what Selene was talking about.
Jeremy instantly wasn’t comfortable with him, but told only Nallely upon walking her home. “He seems fine to me,” Nallely said. “He’s just a little older, that’s all.”
“That’s exactly my point. Why would an older student want to hang around with freshmen? It goes against the laws of university!” Nallely shook her head.
“You’re just paranoid.”
The sun was setting now in an early October dusk. The light was matched evenly with the darkness. It seemed ironic to Pan that E. Ripmav was on the dark side of campus. She slowly walked up the old wooden stairs and looked at the iron knocker on the mahogany door quickly running everything through her mind one last time.
“He ask you out?!” Nallely screeched, excitedly. Pan nodded, blushing slightly and curling into herself in utter embarrassment.
“Well what are you going to do?!” Marlie asked, just as excited. Pan shrugged and brought her knees to her chest as she adjusted on Nallely’s clothing drawers.
“I was hoping you guys would tell me.”
“Well obviously go out with him! You’d be such a cute couple!” Nallely giggled bouncing.
“We knew it was coming anyways, so yeah I agree with Nallely,” Selene said, half laughing.
“You knew it was coming?!” Pan hissed looking at her.
“Like you couldn’t see that coming Pan,” Selene laughed. Pan blinked at her.
Nallely sighed. “You’re so oblivious Pan!” she laughed.
Pan shrugged again then looked at Naomi who seemed to not be paying any attention. “What do you think?” she asked her.
“Do what you want,” Naomi mumbled, not really paying attention. Her eyes were on review notes for her biology class. Pan slumped then and let out a dramatic sigh.
She knocked first, not knowing what else to do. But there wasn’t and answer. Pan sighed. “They’re setting up a horror movie for me…” she grumbled to herself opening the door slowly; of course it was open. Inside was black. Pan shut the door behind her trying to adjust her eyes so she could find the light switch. Her eyes weren’t co-operating.
After a few moments of standing in the darkness she heard a door creek open, sounding like one from an 80’s cheesy horror flick. Pan sighed. “If any of you dare try to jump out at me I’ll be kicking you somewhere where the sun don’t shine,” she warned. Suddenly she felt a presence behind her and she turned seeing a pale figure in the darkness. She cringed slightly, unsure if the boys she hung around with were the only paranormal ones on campus. “Hello?”
Their arm snapped to the right and suddenly a light was on in the front foyer of the fraternity house. Before her stood Sebastian, the corners of his lips somewhat up trying to conceal a smile. “Hello,” he said.
Pan moved passed him looking around the room of the old home she now stood in. “You people thrive on the night, don’t cha?” she asked. Sebastian chucked gliding behind her as she made her way into a darker room. “Are there other…guys staying with you, Warren, and Jeremy?” Pan asked, her eyes catching an old picture of the university in sepia colours; was one of them a younger version of Sebastian’s father Keith?. Sebastian appeared before her again as she leaned against a door frame and put one of his arms on both sides of her head -boxing her in. He tilted his head; the things that went through his head. “Or is it only you guys?” Pan asked.
“Only us,” he smiled. Pan ducked under his arm and walked into the dark room. Again Sebastian turned the light on, revealing a small kitchen.
“NO fair you have a kitchen!” Pan exclaimed. “Have any human sustenance?” she asked turning to him thirsty for more of her favourite drink; she could never get enough.
Sebastian nodded. “I am sure we do…”
Pan turned and skipped to the fridge to begin digging through it. “So where are the boys anyways?” Pan inquired, finding a carton of orange juice.
“Warren’s finishing up a test and Jeremy is out in town with Nallely, they are buying potato chips.” Pan nodded and turned her head to Sebastian as she poured herself a glass from the carton. Sebastian suddenly perked up; a new scent had entered the room. Pan turned to lean on the counter and lifted the cup to her lips. Sebastian’s eyes widened. “No, Pan! Don’t!” he yelled at her just as she took a sip from the glass, his arm reaching out as if she was going to knock the cup form her hand himself.
Immediately Pan spit out the contents of the cup, dropping it to the ground and gagging. “Dear gosh! You put blood in a orange juice carton?! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?!” Pan screeched. She ran to the sink then and turned it on to full, pushing her head under the running water, rinsing her mouth a half a dozen times before she turned back to Sebastian, gripping the counter in frustration. “That’s disgusting!” she growled through her teeth. Sebastian then smiled, his laughter seeping through moments later as he looked her up and down. “What. Are. You. Laughing at?!” Pan growled.
Sebastian appeared beside her again and scanned her once more. In the moments of Pan’s tizzy, running to get the taste from her mouth some of her hair escaped her ponytail and had become dripping wet. She had also missed some of the ‘orange juice’ in the corner of her mouth, not noticing it there. “Why you are fitting right into this house at the moment Miss Pandora,” Sebastian chuckled. He leaned forward and back as fast as he could, kissing Pan briefly to the spot where a drop of blood had remained -on Pan’s cheek- and sucked it in; hopefully he had been too quick for Pan to notice. “
What was that?!” she glared. “
I am sorry, it is just my nature!” Sebastian laughed.
“To put blood in a perfectly good orange juice carton?!” Pan hissed.
Good, she didn’t notice. Sebastian laughed again. “Yes, let us go with that answer,” he smiled. Pan glared again. Suddenly something came over her. Her mind had deciding to be playful. Not knowing why, Pan attempted to push him backwards only to push herself back into the sink counter instead.
“How VERY daaare you!” she hissed. Sebastian took a step back preparing himself to run off. “What did I do?” he said quickly.
“You didn’t budge when I pushed you! I demand that you move when I do so!” she growled, this time her voice exceptionally playful and rambunctious.
Sebastian considered what she had said to him then tilted his head. “Push me then,” he purred, a crooked smile sketching onto his lips. Pan pushed on his shoulders again. The fall was delayed. Two seconds past before Sebastian took a single step backwards, just to humour her.
“Not good enough!” Pan pushed him again, but this time Sebastian fell instantly, tumbling backwards into a backwards somersault, then hoping back up with his arms spread wide to present his little act. He enjoyed this little game; anything to make her happy. Pan smiled, shaking her head and walking away from the wet countertop to redo her ponytail.
The past two weeks had been nothing but joking around with each other -just like that one instant- as if what happened the second night of university never happened. Sebastian didn’t push her for an answer. He never asked again of what she decided. He knew she either forgot that he had, for her memory seemed to be horrible these days, or she didn’t want to and her way of telling that to him was just carrying on like normal. If she was happy being friends, then he would just have to as well. But then again, the girl always did surprise him.
They were sitting at his kitchen table now, laughing as usual and drinking actual orange juice that turned out to be beside the camouflaged drink. Sebastian had leaned over the small table to become closer to her. His arms were folded nicely on it as the rest of him was hovering over them.
As the minutes ticked by, somehow they had eased out of the laughter and were now watching one another’s slightest movements. Taking in each other as if they were the only things in the room. Pan couldn’t understand why, but at the moment she didn’t really care. And that’s when she said it. “…Yes…”
Sebastian’s eyes darted back up to hers and furrowed. “Pardon me? Yes to what?” he asked a little taken.
Pan leaned back in her chair and twiddled her thumbs. She didn’t exactly want to repeat herself for she was surprised she was even agreeing to it. Whatever part of her that decided on it was strong though, despite her being terrified of what her answer might bring in the future. Safety? Friendship? Love? Death? “YES,” she sighed, this time her voice a little louder. Click.
“Oh,” Sebastian smiled.
For another few seconds there was silence. Pan could feel his eyes on her as she continued watching her thumbs. “What now?” Pan asked.
Sebastian chuckled leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms. “Oh, I can think of a few things,” he purred.
