I seem to draw a lot of doorways. I don't know what a psychiatrist would make of that.

Don't doorways mean you're open to new experiences?  In comics, though, I think the effect is an increase in the energy of the comic.  There's a sense of movement and transition injected into the strip, as opposed to a comic where characters are just plopped into a single location, then magically plop into a second location.  Speaking as a comic artist who only ever plops characters into locations and almost never draws doorways, I can firmly say that your method is better.
