I really would like to make a note that your work truly resembles 's own .
[link]

It troubles me dearly that you are in a way..almost copying her work.
i am a full time artist/self employed and ...
i think this is almost a..SIMILAR if not replicated copy of her work. ....so you plan to sell these???

i hope if you plan on selling these...

that this may be made by your. OWN.. design

this is VERY VERY SIMILAR TO MISSMONSTERS WORK.

with upmost respect...i would state ...this is a copy of her own work. you just made it with your own hands.......I WOULD SAY ALMOST A COPY IN FACT
.i hope you ALSO consider that may or may not...
be on a fine line of copyright and art theft.

i am just stating my own personal opinion... that i consider this a very similar if not a copy of own work.

i have purchased from missmonster this mask and a few others.
and am very familiar with that artists work.

to profit from your own work ....i support but to COPY some one else's work....is not right.
it is illegal.

i think you should really consider. if you want to make money... off these or just make them for personal enjoyment that maybe you should credit missmonster or change the design somewhat.

again this is my own personal opinion and it troubles me how VERY SIMILAR THIS MASK IS TO HER OWN WORK. ......extremely similar and i think i should bring to your attention...there is a fine line from ARTIST REFERENCE AND DOWN RIGHT COPING SOMEONE'S WORK.
please consider this if you should choose to sell these. i

also... you have a stunning gallery but i hope that you consider what you doing.

Why do you feel the need to crusade across 's art pages? Honestly. While you may feel you are doing "good" by trying to defend MissMonster you are making yourself look like an uninformed tyrant.

This artist has given credit where it is due on pieces that were templates, and on their own work they are taking their own credit for their own research and creation.

Once again, stop trying to state that any one modern artist on Deviantart can lay claim to Oriental Style Masks.

MissMonster, I am proud to say, does not hold copyright to any of the following styles nor any of the styles that directly come from the Orient or anywhere else in the world.

Shishiguchi 獅子口

A mask representing a type of Chinese lion.

Noh: A mask representing a type of Chinese lion. Like a roaring lion, shishiguchi has a squarely open mouth displaying metallic gold teeth, fangs, and large red tongue. Between the metallic gold eyes that peer majestically out from beneath strong, thick eyebrows rests a wide, flat nose. Gold-colored shishiguchi are sometimes called dei-shishiguchi to distinguish them from the less common, red-colored shishiguchi. Kanze-style shishi masks tend to have bare heads and large fangs, but Hōshō shishi have a black line across the top of their foreheads, which in human masks would indicate the base of a black lacquer hat (kanmuri) and are thus known as kanmurigata shishi. A fine 16th century example belongs to the Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya. While many shishi masks of Chinese origin can be found in the dengaku and gigaku repetoires, the various shishiguchi masks are Japanese in origin. Used for the second act of the play Shakkyō (Stone Bridge) for the role of the father lion who dances boisterously among the peony flowers in Monju Bodhisattva's paradise. Sometimes, one or more child shishi wearing a shikami mask or a smaller version of shishi known as kojishi (child lion), accompanies the father. A Muromachi period example of the child shishi with menacing up-turned eyes belongs to the Hōshōkai, Tokyo and is designated an Important Cultural Property. Attributed to the 13th century carver Shakazuru Yoshinari.

Shikami 顰 [Biting Lion]

Also:

Hagami, Biting teeth, 獅噛, 歯噛

A mask representing a bad demon whose defeat ends in celebration.

Noh: A mask representing a bad demon whose defeat ends in celebration. Muscles tense with rage, eyebrows furrowed to the extent that the upper half of the metallic gold eyeballs are hidden, a nose that juts out with its large nostrils, and blunt, large upper and lower teeth emphasize the scowl on the shikami mask, from which its gets its current name meaning "awful, scowling face." The black painted hair of the eyebrows, mustaches, beard, and head all look as if they are standing up, tousled from anger. The mask is painted a dark skin color.

Used for demon roles who perform the strenuous maibataraki dance such as the devil in Rashōmon, the female devil in Momijigari, the spider man in Tsuchigumo, or the god-devil in Hiun. It can also substitute for to represent the spirit of the death rock in Sesshōseki. Shikami, or a varient with sculpted bushy face hair, ikazuchi (thunder god) is used for main role in Raiden (Thunder God). When the shikami is used to depict a good demon, a court hat, kanmuri, is worn on top of the mask. For the play Nue a bird-like variant, either nue or taka, might be used. The mask type is attributed to Shakazuru and a fine copy bearing the stamp of the first Ono Deme master, Zekan (d. 1616), is kept by Tokyo National Museum.

See kijinmen and nōmen . [ MB]

While I could go on and site more historical references I hope that you would take the point. is still an individual artist that is using his individual inspiration of the above and other oriental influences of style to create a mask. There is really nothing other to look into it.

Please stop trying to shut down, slander, and create havoc for an artist where it is not needed, doesn't support anything, really doesn't support MissMonster in any other way than making a show of how very rude, childish, unable to create a comment in Word and do a spell check, you are.

How is this copying? I thought was a style? That'd be like me drawing a girl with Day of the Dead face paint on and saying it's copying Silvia Ji. It's a subject matter. It's not someone else's work that he's taking credit for.

When did the subject of art theft warp? To this standard, all Fan Art should be falling under what you're saying too.

arcticphoenixstudios In reply to CattBon [2013-08-19 19:03:12 +0000 UTC]

Kind of on the right track, but it's not just fan art. Any revivalist styles like Egyptian Revival, Pre-Raphaelite, all the Art Nouveau pieces that are trending lately that are very obviously referenced from Mucha, for starters.

I wouldn't say subject matter, but style. It does very obviously reference missmonster's work, but at the same time both also very heavily reference masks and sculpture from Indonesia, China and Japan.

And to ramble/rant a tad. Lamelobo's argument, while I understand where it's coming from, is bizarre. Especially coming from an art history student, because of the examples I gave. Art throughout history is riddled with style copyists and on top of that, contemporary artists copying historical styles. And the number of repeated apologies for typos (as in the same sentence appearing consecutively) and general reiterations of statements within paragraphs of each other....from a *grad* student? Really? Finding it difficult to take them seriously. A chunk of their supposed education is not quite apparent enough for me. Ugh. Going off on a tangent...

Please... take a look at work...and then his.

again...with upmost respect...
... this is my own personal opinion and it troubles me how VERY SIMILAR THIS MASK IS TO HER OWN WORK. ......extremely similar and i think i should bring to attention...there is a fine line from ARTIST REFERENCE AND DOWN RIGHT COPING SOMEONE'S WORK.

and i also...read(in comments) that he mentioned he ...might try to sell them.???? DIY mask blanks etc?

i see he has a few other "fan art pieces" he has in his gallery that are similar to or missmonsters masks.

I have actually purchased a few of missmonsters (masks)... FROM MISSMONSTER website!!!..myself.
.
i feel like this guy really is copying
my own opinion ...just thought folks ....esp. THE ARTIST. should really consider what he his doing.

by the way... has some really great art in his gallery

pardon my typos. with upmost respect i say this. cheers.

( i am not dissing the artist. just stating my own opinion... that this particular mask..spirit of the lion looks VERY similar to missmonsters! either way. just my opinion....this artist has a great gallery.
not trying to berate the artist. thanks for you feedback with up-most respect. cheers.

mostlymade also credited missmonster for using one of her blanks. he did a stunning job. ...but the mask (lion of the wind) is very similar to missmonsters. either way i am sure other folks have taken missmonsters blanks and done the same thing..altered them.
i just feel that folks ...artist..should not directly copy a artist...with a POSSIBLE INTENT TO SELL !!!. EITHER way. mostly made is a good artist! cheers.
