2018 24" x 48" oil on canvas.ΒThe sound of Rusty Black birds comb through the forest canopy with song as they migrate down the mountain chain into the south. The motion of transition between summer and winter, the curtain of leaves drop off giving a hemlock tree access to the open sky. The roots of the hemlock tree spent all summer digging deeper into the rocky ridge tilling stone and breaking them down.

I was wondering, how you came up with the composition? Did you use a photographic reference?

I was out in the woods following the black birds, looking strait up, until i found the hemlock tree. I took a few pics of the scene. then I sketched out the feeling i had until i molded a few pictures together, and came up with the basic composition. A combination of looking up and and down to the horizon, where the birds where moving to. so yes photo and live sketches.
