"Rootlings are a fantasy animalistic species themed on nature and magic. They are characters that can be grown and developed through art, writing, and player collaborations. The Rootlings ARPG rewards players with points for creating, and the points will allow your character to progress in the game. This art roleplay game is built for encouraging creative freedom and the development of friendships within a community of artists."

Lumesse
(loom-essy) meaning: the existence of light. This is the magic power bestowed upon and filling each rootling.

Lumesse is what the rootlings call their sacred magic. The source of this magic begins with the Elden Roots, who's dwelling is unknown to mankind. Each rootling is filled with this power that glows as embers do. The humans call this their "soulfire."

Earthen Gifts
When a rootling is created, the ancient magic they inherit grants them "earthen gifts." These features can be anything found naturally occurring in the rootlings' world. Plants, minerals, and other natural substances will merge with the rootling's bodies and become a part of their forms.

Things that Exist in Our World
Plants and other features that appear on the rootlings may be real, existing things that we find on our own earth. This plant, rock, crystal, fungi, or other element might have existing lore of its own that can interact with who your rootling chooses to be. For example, a bonsai tree represents harmony, wisdom, and calmness, so a rootling given a bonsai tree may or may not feel the need to lean into those traits as well.

Things Imagined by the Player
The natural features of rootlings are not limited to existing things in our world! Lumesse magic affects rootling bodies in creative ways, therefore, the earthen gifts can be new, creative plants and things that a player chooses to design. Players may also dramatize existing flora be more fantastical in appearance. The player might write up an entire lore and purpose for this feature, or leave it a mystery.

Patterns & Markings
Many species of animals have a wide array of markings to choose from. If your rootling is crossed with a fox you might choose markings from red foxes, marbled, silver, fennec, or any of the others. This is the case for every design! For a coronation or creation with no special additions you can choose from any existing trait that appears on the species included in your design. It is also acceptable to choose one animal for the anatomy, and another for the markings.

A coronation is a very special moment. It is the time at which an animal becomes a rootling.

Lore
Every rootling is filled with the ancient, sacred lumesse magic that has been passed down to them from the beginning of time by the Elden Roots. By living on earth and experiencing life, the magic within each rootling is enabled to grow. When a rootling performs a coronation it is crowning an ordinary animal with a portion of its stored lumesse. The magic fills up this new creature, alters its physical appearance, grants it earthen gifts, and morphs into a new creation. The new rootling must choose a color for its own lumesse and begin life again as a nature spirit.

Whatever animal the rootling was in its past body will continue to define its form as a rootling, however, it may also draw in the features of another animal in its same ecosystem. If this secondary species is added it may affect anatomical changes, coloration options, and fur pattern availability. Rootlings formed through coronations always have the option of being designed with two animals!

In order for an animal to be crowned with lumesse magic and become a rootling it must complete a special kind of trial. These trials present as art prompts, and can be written, illustrated, animated, or crafted as the artist's inspiration chooses.

Story & Meaning
The Rootlings ARPG is designed to encourage deep story development of its characters. This trial is meant to be a tool for kickstarting a rootling's individual lore, and to help find its character's voice and personality. What kinds of fears could it have to face? What kinds of inner conflict might it have to overcome?

Flame Language
Rootlings can be seen with and without their lumesse flames displayed. While lumesse magic is a core part of their species, how they choose to use and present it is up to the individual. Some rootlings prefer to use their flames as a sort of language. One flick of the fire could be a warning, while another may be a greeting. Rootlings might also choose to display emotions based on the size or brightness of their flames. Some rootlings might try to woo others by dazzling them with lumesse.

Rootlings Points System
Each rootling character functions as its own "save file" and will build up lumesse magic when it is portrayed in art or writing.

Rootlings is an ARPG (art role play game) which means you progress through the game by creating art, and progression is monitored by the earning of points. The main goal of the Rootlings ARPG is to encourage art growth, push people to try new ideas, inspire artists to study animal anatomy, create community bonds, and promote the freedom of creativity.

Lumesse Points (LP)
Lumesse points represent the rootlings' magic. As you progress through the game your rootling will earn these points when it is portrayed in writing and visual arts! Lumesse points function by:
determining how many flames your rootling can display
allowing your rootling to perform a coronation
letting your rootling use a temple
make special changes to your rootling's form
let the rootling ascend to celestial soils
