Description An unfinished drawing for my local zoo's charity event. Why post an unfinished drawing? Well, I need your help!

I'm debating putting a background in this drawing, nothing busy (don't to take away from the owls), but jusrt some simple color. I was thinking a light teal, which might give a slight allusion of sky and clouds. Then again, maybe the plain white background is okay. do the owls pop enough? Tell me what you think!!!

Also, the tree branch looks funny to me. I'm open for suggestions

A teel color would be nice.. but how about a reddish color, to be like a barn?

Looks gorgeous, I espechially like that one on the left (my left) the detail of depth in his face is great and I like how they all have different poses, not restricting it to every owl looking forward.
I think there shouldn't be any background at all but maybe focus on applying more detail to the branch and their feathers? the one on the left could do with some more depth in colour with his feathers and the with the one on the right, maybe flesh out his legs and claws a little bit? Same with the middle owl, perhaps apply more grey to the white feathers to make it stand out. But you've done a great job either way.

...and have you seen this trailer? I'm not familiar with the books, but the main character is a barn owl (and its a story about owls) plus its animated in Australia which makes me more excited to see it. [link]

Thanks for the tips. I have added some more branch detail (not posted yet on this website) but I'll have to look into shading the owls a bit more.

Yes, I LOVE those books, have been reading them for years. I pray that the film will do them justice

Look forward to seeing it

I might see if I can find them before the movie comes out, I've heard they're quite short books

The books are quite short, but definately worth the read!

The owls look stunning. The tree branch looks fine to me. Not sure what to do for a BG. Perhaps something graphic rather than organic? Any color scheme will work too since the owls have such neutral colors.

I do agree with artizek. Maybe something a little darker would work. Have you considered reds or possibly making it sunrise/sunset colors?

Moundfreek In reply to Jackalopette [2010-06-05 18:28:53 +0000 UTC]

Possibly. Right now I'm open to any background ideas. Sunset might go nice with the yellow feathers. I have until July 15 to figure it out (that's when the piece is due)

How about adding some darker shading to the branch, like adding some blue to give it some depth. I personally think the white background looks great as it is.

Hmm, I think the owls look very nice with a white background. As for the branch, perhaps if you gave the shading a bit more detail? Since the owls themselves have stunning photo-realistic colouring!

Alandree, thank you for the input! Means a TON comming from you.

Looking at again, I agree-more branch shading is needed!
