I just scanned this in. The picture is large, and had to be scanned in four pieces. Very much a pain, and you can see the divisions in the page. Still, it was the best I could do.This is Elphaba from Wicked, the second best musical ever made, and a depiction of thee best scene, Defying Gravity. You may listen to and see her here: "[link] "
I intended to make this Elphie modeled after Stephanie J. Block, the origional touring Elphie, the one I saw, and my favorite. It does not look too much like her--these are my excuses: I find depicting specific humans exceedingly difficult. I'm not much a human drawer, but I occassionally try to be. Second, the picture I was referencing was blurred, and things like facial details were hard to see. With a mirror, I had to reference my own. Lastly, the pose in the photo I used did not work with paper's constraints. My sister posed with a plastic kitchen broom for me in a suitable position.
Other than that, I'm am pleased that it reflects my style of drawing. Still, I wish it could have turned out how I intended, and the seams were not so visible. One good thing is I think it looks a little younger than Miss. Block, which would be more appropriate since the character Elphaba is supposed to be 18/19 at this point of the musical. It took about 2 days to do, and is done in this charcoal pencil devise I have, but do not have a proper name for.

You sure did a tremendous job capturing Elphaba's emotion as she sang and I can feel the emotion you must have felt watching her.

Idina Menzel? I will probably do one of her one day, I just did Stephanie Block first because she is my favorite. Menzel, Block, and Shoshana Bean are my all time faves.
Rent is your favorite musical? I like Maureen (guess why, haha)!! Seriously, she is hilarious in the 'Over the Moon' monologue!! My favorite musical of all time is definately CATS, now and forever.

I did not see Idina perform. However, I have watched a 'bootlegged' copy of one of her performances on the internet. I had the fortune of seeing the origonal toruing cast live last September.

No, I haven't seen it, but I'm OBSESSED with it! Ever since our band got the music for it, I got a recording of the actual songs wth Idina Menzel and fell in love. It's coming to the Huntsville area soon I think so I'm gonna go see it, no matter how much it costs! lol

It is comming to your town?? Oh, just to tell you, you need to buy tickets NOW!!! We bought ours three months early and ALMOST didn't get seats. We won't make the same mistake again (it is comming again in a year, and we already bought the tickets). Just a helpful hint .... as you can deduce from the music, you DO NOT want to miss this show!!

My band is the Giles County High school band, we DID compete this year(last fall). We to about 6 of them and we even host one! It's SOO awesome! Well, I'm in my junior year, so I'm a 3rd marcher, but I've been playing for 7 years. Next years show is gonna be "Colors" I really don't know what it's about, but I'm hoping the colorguards uniforms are better this year. Last year, We called them "Grinch-on-crack"! LMAO! Ummmmm...We had this REALLY cool thing where we would have these boxes in the center of the field and silver tarps came out. At the end of "Defying Gravity", we'd move to a spot in a big spiral around the tarps and then laid down and it looked like a big spiderweb in the pressbox. Only bad thing, is that people tripped over it and our #2 bassdrumer tripped over it and ripped her tendon. Now she can't march for the next 2 years. Sux......ALOT!

What an AWESOME show!!! I graduated in 2005, but my sister is in the band so I go to all the compatitions and stuff. They placed 2nd in class 4A last year, and did we in my senior year. Finalists since 1980-something!!! (which means top 6 in the state)
So next year is your last year? I found that soooooo depressing as marching band seriously the best thing that ever happened to me. Do you happen to have any clips of your music from last year? I'd LOVE to a band rendition of defying gravity, if it's available!!!

ooo!!! You know what is wierd??? We won state champs in 97 and 98 too!!!! I of course wasn't in band at that time, but still cool!!! We ALMOST one last year, but we were penalized for 'dutting' in the Invesco field tunnel (Bronco's stadium) upon exiting the field. But man, that dutting sounded cool (scared the next band going on). But we were THIS close form that gold medal!!!

I just sent it. Our show shirts (which I happen to be wearing now) are black with a thingy that says "Wicked" on the front in green on the top righthand corner. The back has the "Wicked" thingy with the green and white witch and the clock except it says, " Giles County High School Band 2005 Fall Show." Its awesome. We almost got into finals this year but we got penalized because the guard was counting out loud! lmao! But our G.E. score was pretty high. How big was your band? Did you get my e-mail yet?
