Artisan Crafts
Browsing through the dozens of art subcategories that you can find on DeviantArt, there’s always at least one that intrigues you, and prompts you to delve deeper – what does it entail, where does it come from, where did it all start?
Architectural model-making is that subcategory for me.
Someone, somewhere, was the first person to create a small, detailed house that was – or would become - the perfect duplicate of the real thing. A place where people can work and live, where they can be and become something more. So how did architectural model-making come to be?
Ancient civilisations did it first
Some of the oldest architectural models, or maquettes, date back to 4,500 BC. Ancient civilisations did not create them to study and investigate building techniques; they were mainly gifts and have often been found in tombs.

From model to creation
In the Late Middle Ages, architects like Filippo Brunelleschi, took to creating physical models in order to guide the craftsmen in the construction of the actual building, but also to verify and control that the construction works. Having a small model served as a test before construction commenced, to ensure the techniques used were reliable. For this reason, several models of the Florence Cathedral exist, though it wasn’t until much later that the objectification of the models turned them into a work of beauty unto themselves.
However, it is of note to mention that Brunelleschi left his models for the Florence Cathedral incomplete – to make sure he was in full control as the building was constructed.
It was Leonardo Da Vinci, who believed in the purpose and intentions of architectural model-making, who created most architectural patterns and theories that are in use today – ideas that in his time, were thought to be radical and ingenuous.
Models sell
Architectural model-making has developed and evolved since those first models; since the 20th century, Computer Aided Design is being used more and more to create virtual models that illustrate the building-to-be in all its facets. An advantage to this new way of creating architectural models, is that one can easily edit it to one’s preference, where before, one had to construct a completely new, physical model. The drawback is that it’s less real to those who prefer something other than a picture on a 2D screen.
The purpose of architectural model-making has also changed greatly. These days, it serves to sell a potential to clients; by showing people on a smaller scale what the building will look like, one can easily see what it has to offer – and thereby garner financial backing to those interested.
