Description
When: May 15, 2018
Where: Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands
The Slender Mongooses have been in this enclosure for a while, but it took incredibly long for them to overcome their shyness and hesitation. We'd only seen the first few photos of them appear when we started seeing them ourselves. They'll still hie off as soon as they spot you looking at them, but they'll come out more and more even knowing you're still there. They're incredibly fast and the enclosure is made of a lot of corners so finding the perfect spot to photograph them is tricky. Especially considering there are, from what we've gathered, two in this color and one in the darker variety who is a bit heavier-set.
Species: Slender Mongoose (Slanke mangoeste)
Latin name: Galerella Sanguinea
Originates from Sub-Saharan Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The Slender Mongoose is also known as the Black-tipped Mongoose and the Black-tailed Mongoose.
…Up to fifty subspecies of Slender Mongoose are recognized, with the Black Mongoose of Angola and Namibia sometimes considered a separate species.
…The color of the Slender Mongoose’s fur varies widely between subspecies, from a dark reddish-brown to an orange red, black or even yellow. They can all been distinguished from other Mongooses though due to the prominent black or red tip on their tails. They also have silkier fur than the other African members of the family.

The ones over here are darker and greyer in colour. They come to my garden from time to time!

Oh wow, that's amazing!
Good to hear they're not as shy in the wild as these used to be
There's 1 (maybe 2) in this color, and one darker He has a completely differentt face, but he's just as cute!

Thank you!
They're really not that common to see; I wonder if they're relatively shy in the wild as well. It took them a long time to be show themselves without flitting off as soon as they saw a person.

Thanks!
These aren't all the common, so it is really amazing to be able to see them, especially now that they're a lot less shy.
Hehe, they do look a bit like rats, but also, ferrets

Seems like it must be a really neat zoo. I love a good zoo. It's hard to find the ones that really care for the animals. My favorite that I know of is the one in Anchorage, Alaska. Little rescue zoo.

It is a really neat zoo
In modern times - I reckon for the last 15 years or so - I really notice pretty much all zoos put the animals first. Of course, they have rules they need to conform to, but the animals' needs are definitely a priority where before, it was all about making a lot of money and drawing as many visitors as possible.
