Where: Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands
Not just Meerkats stand up on their hind feet - all Mongooses do! It does look though, as if Meerkats do it to always be on alert, while other Mongooses do it mainly out of curiosity.
Species: Yellow Mongoose (Gele of vosmangoeste)
Latin name: Cynictis Penicillata
Originates from Southern Africa.
Current status: Least Concern.

Mongooses and meerkats do scan the area on their hind legs. When they work in a pack, every one is scanning a different area. You never know where a predator is around.
