Description When: June 12, 2017
Where: Vogelpark Avifauna Alphen aan de Rijn, The Netherlands
We don't often attempt to capture flying birds on camera - I know we should, but visiting during the Summer, there are too often just too many people ruining  a photo. Also, birds move amazingly fast in flight
Since this was a pre-season visit and bird show, we did our best It wasn't easy, not just because of their tremendous speed and unexpected movements, but this zoo chose to fly with several birds from the same species, at the same time. I think there were 7-12 Black Kites in the air at once. We were almost making ourselves dizzy trying to follow one, then the other, as they flew into visible places we could try to photograph.
It's perhaps not the best in-flight shot ever, but since it's pretty out of the ordinary for us, I really wanted to share it with you because we're very proud of it

Species: Common or European Black Kite (Zwarte Wouw)

Latin name: Milvus Migrans Migrans

Originates from Europe and Africa.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

…It has several synonyms in Latin, namely Falco Migrans, Milvus Affinus, Milvus Ater and Milvus Melanotis.

…The Black Kite knows five subspecies: the Common or European Black Kite, the Black-Eared Kite, theSmall Indian (formerly Pariah) Kite, the Fork-Tailed Kite and the Taiwan Kite.

…The Yellow-Billed Kite was long considered a subspecies as well, but DNA has shown that they should be viewed as a separate allopatric species.

…It can be distinguished from the Red Kite by its slightly smaller size, its less forked tail as visible in flight, and its generally dark plumage without any rufous.
