Where: Zoo Duisburg, Germany
The Spectacled Bear twins were still so tiny when we went to see them - the weekend after they'd be presented to the public (meaning, the media) and start going outside more frequently. Mother Bear was very protective and there's been a tiny incident before with one of the cubs getting too close to the electric wiring in front of the glass. It spooked the babies, who became a bit more careful (for a few days) but inspired even more protection from their mother.
The little ones therefore weren't allowed far outside, especially not on their own. They'd be herded back again right away if they sneaked out. And then this moment, of no more than 2 minutes happened. One of the twins came up to the glass, and for a second there, I thought he saw me and got curious. He lifted up on his hind legs, but was a bit wobbly, and toppled over - and ended up in that electrical wiring
The moment went from incredibly cute and a once-in-a-lifetime memory to heartbreaking as he squawked and his mom roared a bit and came running to take him away. Like kids, they forgive and forget quite easily and love adventures when mom allows it.
I admit, it's not the best photo; we had to deal with a lot of reflection and I was a bit distracted by the cubbie getting so close to take the best possible photo. But he's so tiny and so cute, I wanted to share him so M did what she could in the editing stage to give me this photo
