Description
When: October 21, 2021
Where: Dierenpark De Oliemeulen Tilburg, The Netherlands
For this visit, M was testing out a new lens for her camera - hoping it would be suitable for photographing in darker circumstances.
You know we only do minor edits, so this photo is still relatively dark (otherwise it would be plain unnatural and look overly edited...). Just imagine how much darker it actually was! And still, Takkie's eyes sparkle
Species: Large Flying Fox (Vliegende vos of hond)
Latin name: Pteropus Vampyrus
Originates from southeast Asia.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
…The Large Flying Fox is known by many different names, like the Greater Flying Fox, Malayan Flying Fox, Malaysian Flying Fox, Large Fruit Bat, Red-Necked Fruit Bat, Kalang and Kalong.
…Despite what their scientific name suggest, they feed exclusively on fruits, nectar and flowers like any other member of the genus Pteropus.
…It is known as a Megabat and noted for being one of the largest Bats in the world.
…Like all Old World Fruit Bats, the Large Flying Fox is unable to echolocate, but compensated with well-developed eyesight.
…The Large Flying Fox faces threats such as habitat loss and deforestation, but they are also hunted for food (bushmeat) and they are considered pests by some farmers because they sometimes feed on orchards.
