Description
When: May 30, 2019
Where: Faunapark Flakkee Nieuwe-Tonge, The Netherlands
As long as you have photos, it's easy to pretend some deaths never happened.
Moos is one of the zoo animals we had to say goodbye to last year... We enjoyed him for 2 out of the 3 visits we made here. He is sorely missed.
Species: Jungle Cat (Moeras of Rietkat)
Latin name: Felis Chaus
Originates from southern China in the east, through Southeast and Central Asia, to th Nile Valley in the west.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…At times, the Jungle Cat is also called Jungle Lynx (Moeraslynx) due to the small tufts of the ears. However it is not a member of the Lynx genus.
…The Jungle Cat is the largest of the living Felis species.
… Their clauws are equal-sized on both fore and hind legs, which makes climbing down trees as easily as up.
…Though never domesticated, a small number of Jungle Cats have been found among the cat mummies of Ancient Egypt, suggesting that they may have been used to control rodent populations.

Yes he was
He wasn't all that big - a bit bigger than a regular house cat, but impressive without doubt!

When you look only at the centre of his face you could swear he's a domestic cat, but he isn't. He also has that same expression cats sometimes have ("Oh I know you want to pet me but I'm just going to stay here and scratch you if you get closer").
Thanks for making me learn about this species. Rest in peace little Moos.

There are only slight distinctions in his face - and of course, knowing he's not - that makes him stand out from a regular house cat
Haha, cats will always be cats! I loved how he responded to his carers, pretending to be a sweet kitty but I bet he could really lash out.
I've still got some more photos of him, he'll hopefully be remembered fondly through them

Hihi, he does resemble a house cat, but he's not - he's a feisty boy!
Yes, he was only 3 years old but his heart was in bad shape
