Description
When: September 20, 2020
Where: Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands
We aren't ordinarily very lucky with seeing the Spotted Hyenas - they like to play the game of hide and seek, where they run around the hills and peek out till we make eye contact, and then they'll look for another hill to hide behind. It's fun, but it doesn't make for good photo opportunities
This time, they weren't too aware of peole, so I got this pretty one on the move
Though there were 5 individuals, they didn't all get along too well - especially the male didn't fit in. He was kept in rotation on the outside habitate with the others together with one of two females. Sadly, he passed away during the second lockdown (mid-December 2020 to mid-May 2021) and they're trying to find a new good dynamic.
Species: Spotted or Laughing Hyena (Gevlekte of lachende hyena)
Latin name: Crocuta Crocuta
Originates from Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The female Spotted Hyena has a pseudo-penis, making it hard to determine by looking at it whether it’s a male or female.
…It is the only mammalian species to lack an external vaginal opening.
…It counts as the most social of the Carnivora, meaning that it has the largest group sizes and most complex social behaviors, with a matriarchal hierarchy.
