Description
When: September 7, 2020
Where: Landgoed Hoenderdaell Anna Paulowna, The Netherlands
When it's relatively cold outside and you enter an indoor area at a zoo, it can feel like going into a hothouse. The humidity is huge, and your lens will fog up. Luckily, this time, it wasn't quite as bad, and I managed to take this shot of these fun little Monkeys
It looked as if they'd just gotten a snack, and were enjoying it immensely.
Species: Red-Handed Tamarin (Roodhandtamarin)
Latin name: Saguinus Midas
Originates from the wooded areas north of the Amazon River in Brazil, Guyana, French Giuana, Suriname and possibly Venezuela.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…A population south of the Amazon River was believed to be a sub-population, but because they lack the contrasting hands and feet, they are now treated as a separate species namely the Black Tamarin.
…The Red-Handed Tamarin is expanding its population into the historical range of the Pied Tamarin, a critically endangered species. They have been observed to gradually displace the Pied Tamarin in this range through interspecific competition.
…The female will give birth to and nurse her babies, it’s the males who primary care for the young although the whole group may partake in caring for the young.
…They are territorial and can be aggressive; despite their small size they should not be underestimated. They possess not just sharp canines, but also claws instead of fingernails on all fingers and all but the large toe.
