Description

When: December 27, 2018

Where: Zoo Planckendael Mechelen, Belgium

This time, the Bush Dogs - including pups - sort of came towards us, though actually towards the water that's in a perfect place for watching them.

All the other times though, you only had to make the slightest movement, and they'd go and run away again. They made it very difficult to get a good glimpse of them, but then, in the wild, it would probably be that much more difficult. So we consider ourselves quite lucky with the moments we did have with them.

Species: Bush Dog (Boshond)

Latin name: Speothos Venaticus

Originates from Central and South America.

Current status: Near Threatened

Did you know:

…When the Bush Dog was first discovered, as fossils found in Brazilian caves, it was thought to be extinct.

…It is the only living species in the genus Speothos, with genetic evidence suggesting it’s closest living relative is the Maned Wolf or African Wild Dog.

…In many countries it occurs in, they use different names for the Bush Dog, like Cachorro-Vinagre (Vinegar Dog), Cachorro-Do-Mato (Bush Dog), Perro-Vinagre (Vinegar Dog), Zorro Vinagre (Vinagar Fox), Perro De Agua (Water Dog) or Perro De Monte (Mountain Dog).

…While adult Bush Dogs have brown-ish to tan fur, with a lighter reddish tinge on the head, neck and back and a darker underside, sometimes with a light throat patch, young Bush Dogs are actually black all over their bodies.

…Bush Dogs tend to live in small packs, with one mated pair and their immediate kin. They are fluid on land, but also in the water, and will use burrows as shelter.

That is so cute! And that detail about their being thought extinct is super cool.

Thanks

It's such a weird thing to me still; they must have come across a skeleton and thought: "This animal couldn't have survived" and lo and behold, there they're walking in the jungle!

Mechelen is actually in Belgium, not The Netherlands.

I know

So few of my photos are taken outside of the Netherlands, so it's sort of an automatic thing to type. It's not the first time I made the mistake, and I'm sure it won't be the last

Thanks for reminding me though, I've changed it

They are fascinating, especially because they were deemed already gone from this planet. They kinda resemble some bigger preistoric mammals, but a more convenient package I wonder if anyone ever tried to domesticate them.

I know, that's still so weird to me!

Must be crazy to stumble across an animal you thought to be extinct and then see one walking around Makes you think what mammals looked like back in the day...

Hmm, I don't know about that. I think they could be learned some tricks, but they're pretty weird animals so not sure if you'd want to domesticate them

I suppose you are right. They look chubby, maybe people down there were more willing to hunt them for dinner. I was curious because there is "dog" in their name, so maybe someone would give it a go. That would explain the denomination.

It does make one wonder... Dogs must have been domesticated already, and maybe they colonists had dogs with them that responded in a certain way to the bush dogs and they thought "dog!"

I bet natives to the area must have given it a go. Too bad those sorts of things aren't always documented

Good point about their response to actual dogs! Makes sense. I was wondering since they look more ursine than canine to me

Haha, they do! Weird to think they're canids. Maybe they're the missing link between canids and bears?

That's what I keep saying... though looking at them from this angle... I see something else as well... I just can't put my finger on it.
