When: May 24, 2022
Where: Natura ARTIS Magistra Amsterdam, the Netherlands
It's not every visit we get to see the Sloth awake and moving We went for a close close-up this time, not entirely on purpose but really because he was that close and we had no other option.
Species: Linnaeus’s or Southern Two-Toed Sloth (Tweevingerige luiaard)
Latin name: Choloepus didactylus
Originates from Northern South America.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…The Linnaeus’s Two-Toed Sloth is also called Unau.
…The Two-Toed Sloth is bigger than the Three-Toed Sloth.
…The belly and intestines of the Sloth makes up the largest part of its weight.
…Only 1/3 of the Sloth’s body is made out of muscle; muscle is very heavy and would disable the Sloth from climbing to the highest treelimbs. They’re not slow because they’re slow, it’s called evolution.
…Sloths have algae living in their fur; all species of Sloths have different species of algae living in their fur. So actually, they’re a living and breathing eco environment.
…Research showed that Sloths living in zoos estimately sleep for about 20 hours a day, while Sloths in the wild are recorded to sleep about 9 hours a day.
…When Sloths fall into the water, they are able to swim, though they won’t particularly voluntarily get out of their trees.
…The Pygmy Sloth – discovered in 2001, estimated 100 still living on the island Escudo, off of Panama – was first called the Monk’s Sloth, because his facial features were just like those of a monk.
