When: October 13, 2018Where: Texel Zoo Oosterend Texel, The Netherlands
For once, he's not seated on the ground but is perched on one of the poles and we were in time to capture the moment
Species: Striated Caracara (Falklandcaracara)
Latin name: Phalcoboenus Australis
Originates from several islands in Tierra del Fuego and the Falklands.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
…The Striated Caracara is primarily a scavenger, though will also dig up insects and earthworms with its claws. They are also known to prey on weak or injured creatures, such as young Seabirds or newborn and weakened sheep; the latter habit having led to them being heavily persecuted by sheep owners.
…They are drawn to the color red – some suggest as it is the color of meat – and will at times steal red objects such as clothing or handkerchiefs.

This is a moment near and dear to my heart. I just started my volunteer work time at the World Bird Sanctuary here in Missouri (USA). And I get to spend time up close and personal with raptors as often as I want to now. Which is pretty cool. We don't have a caracara on hand right now, but we breed and rehabilitate rare and endangered birds from everywhere in the world, so maybe I'll get to see one for myself soon! We do have an "ambassador" Andean condor on display; she was injured when recovered from a poacher, so now she's doing her part showing the world how awesome she is.

That's pretty amazing, to be honest, that it's not just a sanctuary, offering shelter, but also rehabilitates them, combined with a place that breeds them 
I've seen my first Andean Condor - a juvenile - earlier this year and it was crazy impressive
