Description When: September 9, 2018
Where: Zie-ZOO Volkel, The Netherlands

We are not the best photographers on here, so I hope you know by now not to expect perfection - especially with so-called action shots.
When the Dhole pups are playing, it can be fast and hard and all over the place. You have to be in time, and make do with the photos you get. Some turn out better than others, and I think this one is pretty cool for showing the dynamics and fast movements of this species.

Species: Ussuri or Chinese Dhole (Aziatische wilde of rode hond)

Latin name: Cuon Alpinus Alpinus

Originates from East Asia.

Current status: Endangered

Did you know:

…They’re also called Asiatic Wild Dog, Indian Wild Dog, Whistling Dog, Red Dog and Mountain Wolf. This specific Ussuri or Chinese Dhole, is also known as the Eastern Asiatic Dhole.

…Known to make a whistling sound resembling that of Red Foxes, sometimes rendered as coo-coo, it is unknown how they produce the sound but it is thought it coordinates the clan when traveling through thick brush.

…Dholes are highly social animals, and live in large clans withour rigid dominance hierarchies, containing multiple breeding females. These clans usually consist of 12 individuals, but clans of 40 are also known.

…They are able to jump 7 ft/ 2 meters straight up into the air.

…They suffer many threats to their survival in the wild, such as habitat loss, loss of prey, competition with other species, persecution due to livestock predation, but also disease transfer from domestic dogs. Their numbers are estimated at lower than 2,500 individuals and decreasing.

Yep, they're wild counterparts are having a rough go of it
Wish wildlife conservation would pay a bit more attention to the lesser known animals like them.

They honestly don't look like they should be able to jump that high, then again the animal kingdom does have a lot of surprises.

Haha, they don't look it but they're crazy agile I am still hoping to share a video of them jumping. Some just flop down on their front feet and others really spring from their hind feet. Pretty awesome to see

Cute! So sad about their being threatened, though.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's pretty bad for them in the wild. Their species - without the sbuspecies - are at the same level as Tigers but their plight isn't as well known

Thank you

Aww, thank you, that means a lot! I'm always afraid I have too many Dhole photos, especially since the pups were born so it means a lot to know they're well-loved
