Description The process - this is a BW 35mm film print, developed using the 'liquid light' process. I was printing on very thin paper as I had run out of thicket watercolour paper, and so needed to remember to take it out of the final wash asap.
However, I had one of my "moments" and completely forgot I had ever made this print! 3 HOURS later the tutor asks the whole darkroom "has anyone left a print on really thin paper in the fix?" - I ignored this because I'm usually very careful with my prints, and didn't think it would be me! She brought the disintegrated piece in the tray outside and asked me "this is yours isn't it?" - hmm, yes, yes it was.....
Because the print had been left to fall apart in the fixer and therefore wasn't strong enough to be washed, it still has it's yellow tint and slightly sticky emulsion. After peeling the pieces away, delicately placing them on paper and drying with a hair dryer, I realised I still had pretty much a full image, which actually is quite remarkable!
This portrait represents a beautiful friendship which is very dear to me, but one that is shadowed by both people having serious health conditions, so the torn, wrecked pieces actually make this piece incredibly poignant.
