chinese ink painting on rice paper.

gift art for `MSJames , based on:

Feb 3rd

rain, snow
rain, snow
only the groundhog knows

selected from his haikuwrimo winter 2009 set.

translated into japanese by me:

雨と雪また雨と雪ブタ任せ
ame to yuki mata ame to yuki buta makase

Groundhog Day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day fails to see its shadow, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If on the other hand, the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.

i chose to translate groundhog as pig as it somehow looked like one (or else it wouldn't be named a 'hog' ). we leave it to the ' pigs' to decide the weather. in view of the recent swine flu this could probably sound a little ominous.

also in japanese buta sounds a little like 'buddha'. is this lowly animal also some kind of a god?

hope you like it, mike.

Today I had to slow my car down to a crawl to let a groundhog cross the road. It was only a few feet away from me and he was SOOOOO CUUUUUUTEEEE!
So I searched for groundhog pics on here and I have to say that this is my fav!
Great job!

とても、俳諧らしい翻訳で、いいですね。

風任せのように、豚の風にするるのも良いでしょう。

書の文字も良い。
手書きすることはとても大切なことだと思います。
みなさんに広まることを期待しています。

Now you mentioned it, the little guy does look like something between a guinea pig and a badger.

The paper texture is perfect for snow.

i checked and the groundhog actually belongs to the rodent class, same as guinea. there's nothing piggish about it except for the name given.

Makes as much sense as calling the guinea pig a pig.

I like the mottled colours which are very reminiscent of rain and the dampness it brings.

`MSJames LOVES this on so many levels! Thank you so much Peng, for giving my meager haiku a new, fuller, richer life!!

Oh and I would like a print of this as well, on canvas if I can afford it! So please let me know what I'll have to do to get this.

I'll note you later and thank you so much for making such a beautiful piece of art for me, I am humbled!

Oh thank you SO much!!

I think, after considering, that I will buy it on the watercolor paper. I think it will add a better texture to the piece. Would you agree?

Thanks so much again, I LOVE this work!

Great work That's a pretty awesome gift!

Actually, that reminds me. I have a woodblock print from Japan that features some japanese. If I upload a photo of it as a scrap would you be willing to translate it into english for me so I know what it says?

As the picture is of frogs and water I've often wondered if it is Basho's most famous haiku scribed alongside...

Hi there Moyan - it's uploaded now. Here's the link: [link]

I'd love to know what it says if you can translate it.

Thanks for your troubles

By the way, haven't seen much from you lately (except the gift to MSJ), it's a shame. I look forward to whatever comes next!
