Description Dis is my entry for #GirlsOnly 's contest "My Favorite Color."

My favorite color is PURPLE!!
Here's a picture of me from back in the day...aka like 8th grade. [link]

I have purple hair. It's not manipulated...however, I did bump up the contrast which is why my eyes are purpleish. haha

Anyways...back to this painting.

I had...2 attempts. There was actually another part to this. A heart over top of the hand. It was like...drippy. But I was too afraid to do it free hand straight up with paint.

so...The black background is gouache paint on watercolor paper. The blue and red bit on top and bottom, are gouache, and then highlighted with acrylic.

The handprint (which is mine) is acrylic paint, my own mixture.

I might add the heart on before I submit this. I don't know yet. :/

This whole idea came from a random sketch I did last year that I found while going through my old chemistry notes. I may post the sketch into scraps later.

The blue and red are because blue+redurple! also, they're my second and third favorite colors. Probably because they make my favorite color.

I come up with clever dumb titles, don't I?
The Color Purple is a book by Alice Walker.
It's amazing according to some of my friends. If you read the book, this kinda can go to it. It's a stretch....
Anyways. I actually haven't read it yet. I took it out of the library but never got around to reading it. It's on my list of to-read though.

EDIT:
I added the heart! I like it. makes it look less like a 5 year old's finger painting. it may look simple, but this piece took about 6 hours of work. More than any piece I've ever done.

I understand the feeling. One time I spent a whole two months on a really bad painting! I was so disappointed with the outcome haha but yours looks nice and neat I've never been good at acrylic paintings because they dry before I can work with them, and to change colors you have to rinse/change your brush and mix different paints and blehhh haha I just don't like it.

I really like this one It's purty.
Does your watercolor paper buckle when you paint on it? Or do you paint from a block? Just wondering. XP

Also. I was going to go check out this contest.... but then I realized the deadline is today. XD

do you think I should put the heart on top? or just leave it. It would be a pretty dark purple. I'm thinking yes because it looks only like a handprint with some stuff at the edges...even though this took me like...2 hours! (lots of drying and thinking) anyways, I'm also thinking no because I'm afraid of screwing it up.

I don't know!
I think it would be cool, but if you're afraid of messing it up, then... ?

don't enter. then i have no chance at winning.

And yeah, mine buckles. this was the first time i taped it down. It kinda helps, but not as much as I would have hoped. I didn't do the whole Watercolor paper stretching ritual. I was lazy.

xoruhtra In reply to MP-R [2010-09-01 13:50:47 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, taping it down helps... but I don't have anything to tape it to... Actually yes I do. But I don't.
Stretching ritual? What's that? XD
I have one of those professional watercolor block thingies (IT COSTED MONEY LIKE WAT)... I've only used one piece from it though. But yeah, that stuff doesn't buckle.

I have some watercolor blocks, but I'm saving them for something super special...and yes...things aren't free.

Stretching ritual is when you tape down one edge, dampen a sponge and then wet the paper, and while it's still wet, pull the edges down and tape them. It's obnoxious and I can't do it correctly so I don't even bother.

I didn't sleep last night.

Hm... yeah, I'd be afraid to ruin the paper if I did that stretching thingy.

Why not?

MP-R In reply to xoruhtra [2010-09-01 14:48:27 +0000 UTC]
