I think I've figured out the culprit. I use K-Lite Mega Codec Pack which also uses ffdshow video decoder.

After I uninstalled that pack, the screensaver showed as it should (in the preview image and YouTube video) but after reinstalling K-Lite/ffdshow - the screensaver's displayed as again - black and white.
