Description I could’ve gone the easy route and done a Zelda piece for today’s prompt, but I went for a different legend instead: Legend of the Mystical Ninja. It’s a shame that so much of the Goemon series will never be translated, and what we did get was either butchered in localization (Kid Ying and Dr. Yang, anyone?), edited for no good reason (removing the songs from Goemon’s Great Adventure was not going to suddenly give it mass appeal, Konami of America!), or straight up garbage (the Game Boy one).

Even if it was overshadowed by the Sans one, I was so happy to see a Goemon Mii costume arrive on Smash Bros. <3

And yes, I remember the SNES classic very well. If it's random trivia about the 8- and 16-bit era of gaming, I'll probably know it. It's my weird, oddly-specific superpower. XD

I remember renting a Goemon game on the N64 from Blockbuster over and over (yeah, I know, retro) -- it was just such a sharp and unexpected departure from what I expected of video games that I just couldn't get enough. I've kept my eyes peeled for any new localisations of the franchise ever since.

Goemon’s Great Adventure was the 2nd N64 release and the last game tone localized in North America. I powered through the DS Goemon game, but it wasn’t the same since I can’t read a word of Japanese.

It's a pity, too -- the games' utterly mad sense of humor feels like the type that'd play really well nowadays. Between Deadpool, Borderlands and the entirety of Studio Trigger's work, there's a market state-side for games that really feel like they couldn't care less about what polite society thinks of them... although if Nintendo wants to revive irreverent madcap franchises, Goemon may need to get in line behind Paper Mario and Wario Ware.

Goemon is such an underrated gem. Too bad I guess it's too Japanese to properly localise.

The unlocalizability is what made Mystical Ninja 64 so great! It was proudly weird even by Japanese standards (I assume), so when it was localized, you get musical numbers by bosses with names like Spring Breeze Dancin’ and laugh tracks that didn’t seem to follow actual jokes.

That’s why the Goemon’s Great Adventure localization still sticks in my craw to this day. Why take the theme song and Impact theme out? Seriously, anybody who wanted that game was already down with whatever it was going to throw at them. It’s still a game starring a blue-haired, pious-wielding ninja who pilots a robot sometimes.

I AM IMPACT has to be one of my favourite themes, and it feels criminal that they removed it. Seriously, why would you take out the cool anime theme that plays when you pilot the cool anime robot? I don't get localizers sometimes.
