3d basics are pretty easy to pick up, the tutorials in any decent package should give you all you need. i use maya and have picked up most things that way. the other way i find you pick things up is when you are trying to do something you've never done before and you have to ask people/forums etc. if you get into it i'd be happy to answer any questions i can
