I have no freaking clue man. It seemed to pop up as an aberrational artifact, the same way as a normal lens flair would. But your right. It mirrors the actual eclipse. So I don't know. It happened on both lenses at all apertures I tried it with

I know it's not really the pictures of the eclipse itself you were aiming to take, but in my humble, little opinion, it seems to add a pretty, mysterious, other worldly feel to it. Something familiar, yet different. Makes it a lot more unique than most other people's pictures of the eclipse I've seen, that's for sure.

I took a few images of the eclipse (only 78% totality) - and I got the same artifact. Since a normal lens flair is round, I am fairly certain that the crescent-like artifact is also a lens flare. The only reason it is crescent-shaped is because of the eclipse -- much like the "pinhole camera" shadow phenomenon that was seen all across America during the eclipse.
