That's very cool! Actually the historical Richelieu adored cats. He had 12 altogether!

Such a cute and lovely drawing.
It would be nice to see how they would show all 14 cats with the cardinal in the series though. (Peter Capaldi and all those cats together in the same place, somehow I think that would be a really funny sight. XD)

I love the lighting and the bold cat which climbed on the cardinal's back. Pity that they didn't include this into the tv show - the only movie I've seen Richelieu with a cat was some old version from 50s.

Although my favorite portrayal of Richelieu was the one played by Charlton Heston, Peter Capaldi is not bad in this part. Wish he was more charismatic and cunning, but overall I regret that he is not going to appear in the season 2 (I'm finishing watching the season 1 and I already know that he is going to die in this universe much earlier than in reality).

Thank you for your comment)

well, I can't say I like this character in the book or in it's movie/series portrayals very much. Dumas had invented a complete villain and that is not very historically accurate.

I've seen only Aleksander Trofimov's version apart from Capaldi's but it's hard to compare them because the first one is from the 1979 musical.
You know, after two series of S2 I must say, I miss this character(

I don't think he is portrayed as a villain in Dumas novels. Quite true he is plotting against the queen, but many times it is said that he is the one, who keeps everything in order and even d'Artagnan mentions in "Twenty Years After" that the cardinal was generous for those who did for him some service. He still remembers that it was Richelieu, who gave him the order with the promotion to a lieutenant.

You should definitely check out Lester's films, where the cardinal is played by Charlton Heston. I think it's the best portrayal of him.

Since the weakest part of the tv show is the screenplay, the cardinal suffered from being involved into idiotic plots (kill the queen, really?). I think in the season 2 the situation could be much more interesting - queen being aware of his betrayal, Richelieu knowing that she knows and trying not to cross the line but on the other fact suspecting that there is something between her and Aramis.

I also miss the character, because while the cardinal sometimes didn't serve as the main villain Rochefort doesn't have so much luck. It's another character whose portrayal is shown in much more darker colors that he was in the novel. I like Rochefort in the novels and what I get instead of a clever nobleman is another heartless, unsympathetic bastard killing everyone standing in his way and also a traitor as if it was not enough.

hmmm, maybe I don't remember him very clearly (read 8 years ago, school holiday reading).

Could be, but mr Moffat crossed the Cardinal's path and managed the unmanageble: he killed a character in the show which isn't directed by him, well done.
The main point is that in the series 2 France doesn't bother anyone anymore (as far as I can see now), this is sad.

Unsympathetic....yeah that's the word, he's unsympathetic definitely.

Pfft, a cunning villain cuddling his cat is a well-established trope!
