Lore:

Poland had been emerging as a regional power and leader by the 2020's, but with the power vacuum created by the collapse of Russia, the US pushed Poland to become the new leader of Eastern Europe. With the need to intervene in the remnants to of the old Russia to secure nuclear stockpiles and bring order, Poland became on of the leading members of the coalition doing just that, but it was not without challenges.

The Ukrainian Insurgency proved too much to handle and eventually Poland and the rest of coalition were forced to withdraw, with the exceptions of some territories. One of those was Western Ukraine, from which the Poles did not withdraw, as they tried to save at least a part of the country from falling to the nationalists. So the West Ukrainian Republic was created, with Poland helping to set up a new government from the remnants of the fallen coalition government of Ukraine, now taken over by the Nationalist forces after a short civil war.

Another hard nut to crack was Belarus, which also broke from the Russian Union State, still under the leadership of the aging Aleksandr Lukashenka however. With a stockpile nuclear weapons however, it was a great threat. The country was invaded, but the US special forces squad responsible for the disabling of the weapons failed, and with Coalition forces outside of Minsk, Lukashenka threatened to use his newly operational weapons. Eventually an agreement was reached with the West Belarusian Republic being created, while Lukashenka, at least for a time was allowed reign over the rest of Belarus.

In 2043, the West Ukrainian and West Belarusian republics, after years of integration, decided to join Poland as autonomous states with their own governments, laws and parliaments, much like Wales and formerly Scotland and Northern Ireland in the dying UK. And so the Polish Federation was born, and with it a new great power truly entered the world stage..

This is part of my futuristic timeline, with my Grim Decade and Ukraine maps being canon to this.
