Description

The view looking up the Cávado River from the riverside promenade of Fão. A single Common Sandpiper was pooterling about on the riverside margin of one of the slipways.
We walked downriver back to our hire car after having explored Rua Azevedo Coutinho.

After previously visiting the Pharmacy and being prescribed all manner of expensive cough medicines I took Luciana to see the Fonte de Fão ... for some reason. I had been here in 2018 watching other "Caminos" stop and rest on the park benches nearby. Anyway, the water tap was turned off now ... presumably as a Covid-19 precaution. This part of Fão is ancient in a dusty decrepit way. Quiet, shady, a bit crumbling, and giving off a strange vibe of being outside both history and the present. It delivers a strange feeling of being a location with a character and a determination beside that of its inhabitants. A place that has its own plan which is to be a part of no other plan.

Today was escape day from Porto. Luciana finally drove us away in our Mad Lobos Rental Car after we had to wait a while for it to be returned and cleaned. We spend the time drinking coffee and eating croissants further down Rua de Santa Catarina. The day was sunny and warm, and cloudy and cool ... as ragged clouds blew in from the west in the late morning. The day was still making its mind up as to what mood it was in. Our escape took us outward bound along Rua Nova da Alfândega where a winter plumage Sandwich Tern was fishing over the River Douro. This was seen while our car paused at traffic lights west of Viaduto do Cais das Pedras, at the intersection with Alameda Basílio Teles. A warm sunny day prevailed by now at 12 pm. A Common Sandpiper was also flushed out over the River Douro from beneath the Viaduto do Cais das Pedras.

My job was to provide directions while Luciana drove the car. A strange expedition with me having a bandage on my head after cutting my forehead in the shower last night, and also a hacking cough and sore throat that kept me awake all night. Inevitably we got lost among the tangle of roads north of Porto, which at one stage involved driving back toward Porto on the A28, but we made quick progress to Fão after finding the N13.
