Description Pokemon

One of my favorite animals ever. They're actually a colony animal made up of many smaller animals called zooids. I wanted to incorporate that into the design. Zoolet is their lvl 1 form, basically, a single zooid or protozooid that later on develop into a mature colony. Quarlet is based on the Portuguese man-o-war and is made up of 4 individual animals so they're perfect for the pokemon's second form. Hydrove is a fully developed Siphonophore, made up of thousands of animals.

Had a lot of trouble doing the siphonophore justice when I first started. At first, I was thinking about a man-o-war pokemon. The first few sketches were pretty generic humanoid Pokemons holding a jellyfish umbrella. I switched to having multiple humanoid pokemon holding one umbrella but that didn't look good either. I abandon the community aspect of the animal and stumbled upon a design that turns the sail of the animal into a mohawk. I then realized that making some part of the pokemon transparent and others opaque looks really good so I turn that into one of the consistent designs throughout the designs. The design at the time looks a lot like the final one, just without the 3 extra faces.

I then moved on to the second form at the time. There were a lot of different species of siphonophore to choose from but I picked the one I saw on Nautilus Live. Took me a while but I thought it could make the front of the animal into the body and stinging tentacles into the tail. The design was pretty straight forward and looks almost identical to the finished product.

After a break, I looked at the 2 pokemon and thought that the red orbs can be the zooids. Everything finally clicked together. I drew Zoolet and I tweak the design from the other two so that they look consistent. I had an idea of the color scheme at first but it's really boring. After finishing the outline, I sat there and toyed with the color wheel for half an hour and came up with this. Zoolet was the first name that came to mind, simple and effective. Was thinking up a ship name for the 2nd form but then realized quartet was pretty much perfect for it. The 3rd form was the hardest to come up with a name. At one time it was called "Symphonophore" but just because you name it Quarlet doesn't automatically make it a musical pokemon. A drove of hydras came up later and I was so glad I wasn't satisfied with the previous name.

Didn't put a lot of effort into mimicking the art pokemon style
