re-imagined characters from Roald Dhal's book 'charlie and the chocolate factory' for my unit 1 graphics illustration project.from left to right:
Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Charlie Bucket, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teavee
i'll post these as well as other characters (from this project) on my instagram once i get started on it!

I remember reading an article a few years ago saying that Roald Dhal originally wanted Charlie to be a black kid, but was forced to change it so the book would sell better.

Always thought that the kids should be more diverse andย international. Did you have an idea of what country they would all be from orย are you just going with the usual: Germany, England, America, and wherever Charlie's from?

I did! Augustus is from Australia, Veruca from India, Violet from somewhere in Africa, and Mike from America. I still imagine Charlie as from UK as I think he is in the book and both films.

I absolutely love your creativity with countries! And I love how they're not all Western or English-speaking! I've had my own idea of countries and ethnicities as well:
AUGUSTUS GLOOP - Russia
VIOLET BEAUREGARDE - France
VERUCA SALT - America
MIKE TEAVEE - Tokyo
and for the hell of it:
CHARLIE BUCKET - ambiguous country but is from a British/ Hispanic heritage family
WILLY WONKA - of course his origins are unknown, but I'd make him black. Because why not?

I really really love these ethnicity ideas! I little more than my own actually. Especially Mike from Tokyo, you could do so much with the visuals of bright Tokyo city and how it feeds into his character!
And about Charlie, that's true I forgot about the original version being american! So I agree it should be left ambiguous as well as Willy Wonka.

Actually, Charlie's country is left ambiguous! It's often a fictitious version of whatever production's hosting him, so the Gene Wilder film had him in an American-esque country, the Johnny Depp version put him in a Dickensian metropolis with mixed accents and dialect and the Broadway and West End versions of the musical just mixed it up completely. Although his family had accents coinciding with whatever country was producing the show. The original novel never states anything.
(and sidenote, Roald Dahl almost made Charlie canonically black. Unrelated, but still cool)

this was just a one shot for a graphics project unfortunately. (got full marks on it though! 
but i do have other illustrations of other characters (willy wonka, grandpa joe, oompa loompas etc.) which i might upload some time!
