Description
I woke up a while before sunrise. The reason for this was very simple, it was still raining, and well, my camp was flooded. Good thing I didn't have a bedroll, it would've been all wet and clammy. I got up and started searching the waist deep water for my belongings. The sword was right beside me where I'd left it. My pack was hanging from my staff which had jammed itself between two branches of a tree to avoid being washed away by the flooding water. I stored a fruit in my pocket as I climbed the tree to recover my staff and pack. I strapped the pack around my waist and right leg and jumped down to the ground. Making a huge splash as I forgot about the waist deep coat of water covering the ground at that moment. There was a hill nearby and I started wading towards higher grounds. On top of the hill there was a small gathering of trees, looking rather funny in fact. I made myself comfortable on one of the lower branches of the westernmost tree. I had a good view westwards. I couldn't see anything more interesting then a lake that had suddenly appeared over night, some fog and of course the rain still falling valiantly. It was a rather sad scene, me sitting there in a tree on top of a hill watching the rain fall on a newborn lake only accompanied by my pack, my sword and my beloved notched staff.
After a few moments I got restless and figured I should get off this hill and do something. I gathered some fallen branched from the "forest" and some driftwood from the "shore". I tied them together with some vines, and by the time I had made a nice, very functional, makeshift raft, The restlessness had passed and I felt like eating the fruit I had found in the tree earlier. It turned out it was a chappyfruit from, most likely, a chappytree. Very unpopular due to its extremely bitter aftertaste, but exactly what I needed to wake up properly and get this raft of mine floating. I gave it a hard kick and it slid down into the water. I jumped after it, barely making the gap. Then I remembered I didn't make any oars. Well, the water was only waist deep, I could use my staff to push the raft forwards. Now where was that road I was following. Looking around I saw nothing but an endless lake with some small islands standing out at random. I pushed the raft westwards, it floated nicely through the water, and I felt proud that I had actually made something that didn't fail, nor did it burn or disappear into nothingness.
Not long after my embarking the raft it stopped raining. I thought that was nice, it was starting to get rather cold, and a little wet. Soon after the sun broke through the thick layer of clouds and I felt a great need to quit pushing the raft and lay down for a nap. Leaving the raft to follow what little currents there was in this newborn, waist deep lake. The raft wobbled along with all its hearts content, slowly. It still beat walking though. Except for the part where I didn't know where the road I was supposed to follow were, or if it still existed at all. Oh well, west was a nice direction anyways. I got bored of the lack of speed and started pushing with my staff again. I found myself wondering if there would be any fishes in this lake, I didn't have a fishing rod or anything else to catch anything with so I wasn't able to find out. Besides I didn't like killing thing, not even for food. If I ever ate meat it would already be dead, by others hands. I started searching for a promising island to set up camp, I found no islands at all. Must have been on a big plain or something. In the distance I saw some trees standing burly, water almost halfway up their trunks. I pushed my raft in that direction.
Once there I bound the raft to some of the lower branches, one in each end, using some vines. I climbed the tallest tree to try and see of there was anything to see. The tree was full of fruits I had never seen before, didn't bother to pick them, at that point I was more interested in getting of that freaking lake. I could see something tall towering on the western horizon. I couldn't make out what it was, but anything was better then another day on this never ending lake. I decided that I'd try to reach whatever it was tomorrow. With that out of my mind the fruit I saw just a few moments before peaked my curiosity. It was about the size of an average fist, blueish in color, sweet tasting. I liked it. I ate as much as I could, I hadn't eaten in a while. I filled my pack as well, and threw the lump of bread in the water, it was getting green and moldy, and wet.
I slept on the raft that night, which was rather uncomfortable. The sun woke me up at dawn, naturally. I ate some of the blueish fruit before setting off towards whatever the thing in the western horizon was. As the hours passed it didn't seem to get any closer, whatever it might be. I was actually beginning to get a little worried. I didn't want to stay on this lake a second longer, another night out there was out of the question. Suddenly, it seemed, the thing came closer, and closer, until a big city wall was towering in front of me. About three meters away from the wall the water suddenly got deeper and I couldn't reach the bottom. Might have been a moat there before the birth of the lake. I used my staff against the wall to push myself back to shallow waters. Every wall has a gate, or at least those surrounding cities. I floated my way around the wall, searching for a gate. When I found one I saw it was mounted about two meters above normal ground level, was it a precaution made because of floods? I went out into the deep water and tried to knock on the gate with my staff. Nothing happened. No one home? It was a city, someone ought to be there. But what if everyone left because of the flood, made rafts like me? I pushed myself back to shallow water. Suddenly the gate fell down, just a few feet behind me. It made a great splash sending me flying and ripping my raft to shreds.
