June felt a little more awake with each step she took in the cold morning air. Although it was early early, she could see a little crowd gathering at the coffee bar. She arrived at the courtyard of Windswept Acres and took in the sight. The sky was clear but the sun was barely peeking over the horizon, but the area around the central fountain was well-lit enough for clarity. She scanned the gentle bustle of people, looking for a green head of hair.

After filling her flask with coffee, she doubled back to her target.

“Good morning,” she said.

Misha looked over, “Morning, June.”

They looked cheerful as ever, zipped up in leather to stave off the chill. June had thought maybe the pre-show nerves would kick in by now, but they seemed quite at their leisure. Beside them was Soren, their husband, and strapped onto his back, baby Lucien, who was rugged up and fast asleep in the papoose. Soren gave a quick smile as a greeting and went back to working on his coffee. June slid into an empty seat at the table they were gathered around.

“Jet-lag worn off?” Misha asked, “I wondered if you’d sleep in late again, and miss the coffee bar.”

June nodded.

“I’ve finally adjusted, yes, but I dread to think about when I get back home next week,” she shuddered, and took a sip of her hot drink, and felt it start to warm her body immediately.

“We’ve got work to do before that,” Misha said with a subtle grin.

“I’m all yours for another week,” June said, “Maybe we can squeeze in some work on Sunday as well, if you’re willing to miss watching the Western classes.”

“Oh, maybe,” they paused to think, “I don’t know, if we really push it at the cross country tomorrow, they might need the break anyway. They might get a quick trail ride on that morning, though, if we get permission.”

“Sure, you can ask around to check. Don’t you know anybody here?”

Misha shook their head, “I did come out here for a show years and years ago with Keisha but, it was busy and I didn’t end up mixing much. I can’t even remember who I spoke to recently to sign up for this show.”

Soren carefully climbed out of his seat, cautious not to disturb the little boy on his back, gave a quick pat on the arm to Misha, and stalked over the courtyard to stretch his legs.

“So what are you hoping to get to today?” June asked.

Misha lifted their cup high and took their last glug of coffee.

“Well, the dressage is early and we want to see that. Appa has been out already. Afterwards, we’ll see how Gold is getting on. I can only hope he’s in a good mood this morning.”

“He’s been so good for you lately, though.”

Misha sighed.

“Yeah, he’s doing great, but- I’ve known him since the day he was born. As I know I’ve said before, he was really loyal to his previous owner. I took him on and wasn’t sure how the transition would go, but… the rebellious streak he hit when he matured has been a challenge. But I think I’ve figured out how to work around his moods and get the best out of him.”

“Any last minute entries today?” June offered.

“Hmm, we’ll finish up here soon and check on him and Appa,” they said with a nod, and called behind them, “Soren?”

The tall, quiet man turned back to the two of them.

“Ready to start moving in a few minutes?”

“Yeah,” he said, with the very best effort of a night owl before seven in the morning, and angled himself a little, “Lucien still asleep?”

The little boy was still entirely unconscious and slumped against his father’s back. Misha shot a thumbs up at their husband.

Soren had another quick glance around, as though he was looking for somebody, then stepped back towards his wife.

“I’ll take a steady walk, see you at the stable?”

“Ok, sure,” Misha said, and smiled as Soren planted a quick kiss on their temple and began to stride away. They looked back to June. “Coffee kicking in?”

June took another sip.

“Thankfully,” she said, “I might top up my flask before we head out.”

“You might need it. It’ll be a long day if we want to catch most of the shows.”

Welp I didn't get chance to finish this the way I wanted to, so it turned into a sketchy mess of ink and colour 😌 Ah well, it's more of a vessel for plot anyways!
