Description .....to let go and say good bye....

This is a tribute for Loki my little man who was such a sweet little rattie....
I miss you very much......

Loki had some major upper respiratory problems that just couldn't be fixed by medicine...T_T
If I had caught it early maybe he would have been fine, but my normal vet just said that since she didn't hear anything and he was breathing fine to not worry about his sneezes unless he starts to get worse.

I went to a specialist and found out that rats can function and still be normal (but not healthy) with more than half of their lungs filled with fluid or masses.
She took an X-Ray of my man and, his left lung was half full and his right lung was more than 75% full. And my vet tried to tell me there was nothing wrong!
The specialist said that if you can't hear anything when listening to a rats lungs, there is more than likely something wrong, because that means that there is possibly no air going in to make any raspy sound.

Well he did fine for a while on Baytril and some other strong Pneumonia meds, but sadly the medicine just wasn't working anymore, and he couldn't really move without starting to gasp for breath....so I had to put him down

I miss him soooo much

SO to all rat owners who have a vet that says to not worry about sneezing, GO SEE A SPECIALIST, or ask your vet to take an X-Ray to see whats really in there that you can't hear through a stethoscope!

I did the SAME thing with my cat (insisted on the x-ray when the vet said to 'wait it out'-- turns out my kitty had a tumor over 7cm. long in his chest cavity! Nothing wrong, my ass) . Pet parents should ALWAYS trust their instincts when it comes to this stuff and don't let the vet push you around.

Oh my god that's horrible!
I mean I guess I can understand a vet saying that about a rat, well because he's a rat and just a rat (not to me though, he's my little manβ™₯. But a cat, that's kind of a different story. Was your kitty doing open mouth breathing yet at the point when ur vet told you to "wait it out"?
Is your kitty still with you??

The original symptom was actually that his right pupil wouldn't contract (cat's optic nerves evidently extend to such a distance that the mass was compressing the nerve) and he had some crackling/raspy breathing when examined with a stethoscope. The possible diagnosis were pneumonia or cancer and I immediately insisted on an x-ray even though the vet said to monitor his symptoms. As it turns out, it was cancer, and one that had been developing slowly most of his life (it was a malformation of a gland in the neck). It had become particularly aggressive and a week later, I had no choice but to put him down. I miss him, but I know that he had a good life and that I did everything I could for him, as I'm sure you did for your rat.

Three months later, we adopted a kitten that had been conceived around the time of his death and she is a sweet and as precious as can be. Life goes on...

wow I didn't know that they extended back that far. I mean I knew they were sensitive, it's always crazy how one little thing inside your body can affect a totally different part of your functioning.

that's so sad.
It's good you stood up for your self, even though you still had to put him down at least you knew what was causing it.

Unfortunately that's what happened to Loki's mom Yana, I didn't ask for X-rays. same vet same thing then she died, and I had no idea why and it still kills me today. That I don't know what caused her to become paralyzed, when she was running around not 2 hours before. The specialist said it was probably congestive heart failure, her heart gets big enough it pushes on her spinal cord and wind pipe causing paralysis. But we still aren't sure.

It's good you were able to carry on
some people say some souls are reborn again and again. Who knows, maybe it was more than just coincidence that you adopted a kitten who was conceived around the day your kitty passed.

and you are right life does go on. But they will always hold a little place in my heart

I'm sure he isn't, you know how quickly he forgot about it, just as long as you gave him something yummy afterwords

Thanks again for all your help, and I'm sure he appreciated it too, even if he hated the meds....
