Description This one was based on a sketch card i did from about 3 years ago, funnily enough on Watercolour paper from Venice that I had to use up. The idea at the time was to have several predone commissions that passer buyers can buy at conventions, and my first choice was to try and do Brutal, Heavy Metal fantasy takes on characters like Pokemon. In the end, i didn't find the idea too economical because A) I can make more dosh from a reproduced Print B) Practically every commission I've done has been an individual interaction with a client anyway and C) With more effort and time it looks better as a portfolio pinup. Still, I sold a few and this was one of them. Annoyingly I didn't get a snapshot of it at the time it went (At a Glasgow MCM i think), so i decided to redo it in proper and here we are.

Gengar was one of my favourites back in the day before i went off the franchise. It's not that i've got a vendetta against Pokemon mind (there's pretty much nothing i really "hate" these days). It's a kid friendly game where animal cruelty is conveniently legal, so you can guess my cynical humour on the matter. As a monster designer though I'm certainly qualified to attempt a quite scary take on the franchise, Pokemon if it was an Ultra Violent Dystopia in a nutshell, it's been my dream to one day see an writer like Pat Mills attempt a Pokemon in his vein of taking on the establishment as he always does. Although Southpark hit the nail on the head.

I went a bit overboard with Gengar's muscle definition I will admit, but i can blag and say it aids in the look of his grotesqueness. I borrowed a little bit from one of my other monster designs, in particular my character Mantaklaw. Beyond that i kinda envisioned Ghost Pokemon similar to the Horrors of Tzeentch from the Warhammer mythos.

Gengar and Pokemon by Nintendo. Art by me. Done in Pencils and Photoshop. Believe it or not, this one was mostly done on an audio diet of Ambient Chillout. Made my way up to Thrash metal by the time i finished it.

"Hand of the Mad Aspie" was a working title for this picture if not the next one. Cue King Diamond.

Thanks, mate.
