Description A homage poster based on Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" comicbooks.

This is a another poster that has been on my to-do-next list for ages... Until now.

My humble goal was to make a poster worthy of the legendary comicbook quadrilogy from the 80's. It soon came clear that I couldn't make a decent poster of the whole story, so I decided to make a poster of the third part of the four comicbooks called "Hunt the Dark Knight".

The story itself is a tale set in not-so-distant future where a 55-year-old batman takes the one last fight against the organized crime (and police forces) in chaotic Gotham City. In this particular chapter he confronts the Joker... and kills him with his bare hands. The Robin in these comics is a young girl.

This work is another mix of drawing and some very heavy photomanipulation.

When the movie happens and it will it needs to be in the Watchmen style. I also Batman and the Mutant leader should be played by an actor but also be combination of CGI. This could be one of the best movies of all time if done right. Great job on this poster!

Thanks!

Yeah, this movie, or movies, would be really hard to do right. I think they'll try to avoid the comparison by not doing these stories, just stealing the best parts. I would really love to see all four stories made in to four awesome movies, though.

Dafoe as old Joker is genius, but i always thought Michael Massee (Flashforward) couldv'e been interesting. this is a fantastic poster though, i think maybe making it darker and going over with a black color brush in a low opacity to mute the tones would make this stellar poster even better.

Thanks!

Michael Massee does look right for the part indeed!

Yeah, I tend to overdo the color saturations of my posters.
I'm not sure if it's my low-budget monitor or just me!
I also regret that the bat-signal is placed on Batmans
crotch area, so that gives the poster a whole new freudian
approach!

Oh, well.

Massee also had the role completley nailed in Flashforward. he was Funboy in the Crow as well.

haha , i can understand that. maybe putting the Bat-signal on his crotch is Batman's way to say "f**k the police"? it is an innovative way to deliver a message xD.

Thanks!

I've had this long last dream that someone would
someday make four movies out of Frank Miller's
Dark Knight Returns books.

I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen though.

yea, but maybe a movie per 2 books, each book might stretch and fill it with useless extra stuff.

but ive always wanted to see an alternate batman movie

Hey, please stop helping now ok? Please!

I've haven't got an answer from my requested
girl model yet, whether she want's to be credited
or not. Other stuff is either drawn of from Stock-
exchange, which doesn't require crediting, or both.

Stock image credits please?

Its a lovely image it would be a shame to not credit who you got the pics from

mruottin In reply to Ryugexu [2010-08-21 06:19:58 +0000 UTC]

You're right.

And this is where it gets kind of blurry. I use so many
parts of so many pics even in one character and then
draw and redraw them... so it get's kind of hard to say
whether it's stock or reference for drawing anymore.

For instance I asked a gal to do the Robin pose
and it started with this: [link]
It took eight hours to make just her character.

Ryugexu In reply to mruottin [2010-08-21 15:48:35 +0000 UTC]

Most stock artists require you to credit them... You can also get the image removed for failing to credit stock sources. You need to make a list of where you get your images next time because its unfair to the people who worked hard on the pieces.

Here's how I credit my stock art: [link]

When you pick an image to use, write in a text file what you used and where it came from so you can credit it. This is a great photomanipulation and I'd hate to see it get removed on technicalities.

This isn't about agreeing on anything, this is about the law and fairness to the people who took those photos. I'm trying to help you because I really love your image.

FAQ #157: Can I use things created by other people in my submissions?

I don't know!

I usually use mixed drawing refences and stock images,
so that I'll break the connection to any known actor.

But I got lazy with Willem Dafoe!

Well, the original book is one of the essential
comics of the 80's... So if you ever start reading
comic books, start with it!
