Description

While seeking sanctuary in the Vault of Tears, the party learns that their friends from the Circus Macabre are in trouble. Blind Berteld, the knife thrower, has been arrested for the murder of three children. Since Berteld is such a gentle soul and his case seems to have a lot of loose ends, the heroes set out to the nearby city of Karçau to investigate. The three alleged victims all disappeared from Mistress Blewit’s Dyeworks, where they lived and worked with about a dozen other orphans. Mistress Blewit acts like a concerned godmother, but when the heroes look around the dyeworks and Anton gathers the children to question them, wererat assassins jump out and attack. It’s a trap set by those rodent lycanthropes of the Family!

I’ve always dreamt of setting a fight scene in a dyehouse where enemies could dart from behind the hanging cloths to strike, so I put a little effort into crafting the necessary accoutrements to make the scenery come to life. This set-up also uses terrain pieces and miniatures from Dwarven Forge, Fenryl, Twisting Catacombs, Mantic Crate, Wizkids, Hasslefree, Reaper, Dark sword, Ral Partha, Mithril, Malifaux, Otherworld and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures.

Our ‘What Dreams May Come’ campaign is an adaptation of Richard Pett’s ‘Blight’. While we have already arrived at our ninth adventure (of twelve) in the arc, this scenario makes up the sixth installment in the Pett’s massive ‘Levee’ storyline (which consists of nine chapters), but as often, the adventure as written underwent a thorough rewrite. The original encounter with Mistress Blewit does not contain the ambush, but for me, it was a perfect opportunity to fit in some old enemies and finally insert the envisioned dyehouse.
