"Where are you going, Daddy? Why are you leaving?"The tom looked down sadly at his daughter.
"I'm just going away for a while, little owl," he replied.
The kit crinkled her nose and looked up at her father inquisitively.
"But... why? How long will you be gone?" she asked.
"I'll be gone for quite a while, little owl. I don't think I'll be coming back... I don't belong here, little owl. This is not my home. I could never be part of the clan. I could never be one of their warriors..." the tom gave a halfhearted chuckle. "If they think they can impose their ideals on me, then they're wrong."
The kit felt desperation swell in her chest.
"Let me come with you Daddy," she pleaded.
Sorrow showed plainly on the tom's face.
"No, little owl, you must stay here, with your mother. I won't be able to take care of you," he said.
"But I don't want to stay with mother! She doesn't listen to me, like you do! She hates me!" the kit argued.
"Oh, she doesn't hate you nearly as much as she hates me," the tom replied. "And that's why I have to leave..."
He turned and gently licked his daughter's forehead.
"Never forget who you are, little owl," he whispered. "Some may want you to change... but I beg of you to never let that happen. Be brave for me, little owl... and be yourself..."
