Well, from the looks of things in the show...it's the new "friendship power" that the Mane Six will get from the mysterious box as a replacement for the Elements of Harmony.
In other words, it's what they'll use to defeat major villains from now on.

Cosmetic differences aside, it appears to be almost exactly the same as the Elements, but with two major differences...
*Whereas the Elements of Harmony were items, Rainbow Power is an ability.  Specifically, the "rainbowfied forms" are strengthened states that the Mane Six can enter and exit at will. (Comparable to the ability to go Super Saiyan, but without all the yelling. *XD*)
*Rainbow Power is OBVIOUSLY greater than the Elements in terms of power.

Those are obviously just assumptions, but they're REALLY likely. Either way, I hope it helps.

I agree with your theory and I think those items that Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rarity, and Pinkie Pie have received in the past episodes that have a rainbow glow show with them are obviously connected. When the season finale comes in possibly April or May, all six will have something given to them that in turn will be keys to the box. I've waiting anxiously for AppleJack and Twilight to receive their items of meaning.
