Description

The dark clouded my vision for what seemed like ages, but when I came to, it was still dark, and I was still on the floor. I stirred, a tight moan escaping me.
“Don’t move.”
Cain’s voice. I struggled more to move, but I felt a steady hand push me back down. “I said don’t move.” I rolled onto my back, his hand still on my chest. I took my effort into placing my hand upon his. I longed to tell him how much I had missed him, how life had been hell while he was away, but my throat wouldn’t allow me. I hoped he knew.
I couldn’t see a thing, and I struggled upward as if that would help me catch of glimpse of him. How I had wanted to see his face so long. He seemed to read my thoughts, and quickly stood to switch on the light. When it blared on, I winced, but stared right at him.
He looked the same. The same Cain I had always pictured. His limbs were long, as was his body. He looked predatorily, the wild look in his eye just fading. His lips were mashed together, his black suit clinging to him wonderfully. Same Cain.
I wondered if I looked the same. I supposed not. I was a crumpled mess in the corner, my face on the floor, bruises spackling what skin was exposed. My throat was on fire.
Cain knelt beside me, simply looking at me. I almost wish he wouldn’t, I felt my face burning under his gaze. His fingertips grazed my bruised cheekbone, and he whispered, “I won’t leave you, okay?”
I expected him to smirk and say I cannot take care of myself or once he leaves everything falls to crap, but he didn’t. He got up, and called for a nurse. I couldn’t move.
“C-Cain…” I rasped.
“Shut up.” Cain said, and I was shocked that his voice had almost reached a plead. He noticed too, and turned away, clearing his throat. “You’ll be okay. Just don’t talk.”
I stared up at him, the light allowing me to see him closer and better. His long black bangs tickled my face, and I closed my eyes, lost in the whisper of a touch. He stroked my face, perhaps one of the perhaps three times he had ever touched me gently. The sensation was dizzying--comforting, warm, and exhilarating. I coughed on misused air, making my throat scream in pain.
Cain hushed me, a hand still stroking my hair. For a moment, my throat pain was lost.
I wanted to talk, though. I wanted to tell him so many things, but before I could even stubbornly attempt to, a nurse with a gurney came rushing in. She spoke to Cain, and he nodded. I watched his dark hair fall across one eye. His vision flicked to me, and he knelt down with the nurse. Together they hoisted me onto the gurney.
I groaned, tugging at my tight shirt collar. Before the nurse could move to unzip it, Cain’s thin, strong hands slithered to the fabric and pulled. There was a loud pop, and I felt my skin being exposed all the way down to my rib cage. I saw the glint in the nurse’s eye, as if to say he needn’t do that.
I gulped down precious, painful air, and I noticed Cain’s fingers linger on my marred skin for moment, then snatch away as if my flesh was scalding hot. I allowed my eyes to close, telling myself I would only shut away the bright light. But I slept.
And slept.
And slept.
