Description So here is the construction of the Malfatto mask (the Doctor from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood). I was quite time shy when building this and there's things I could have done better but meh. It pulled together ok.

To put it together I found two masks - one was a Venetian mask at Spotlight (the one with the hooked nose), and the other just a regular mask I also picked up at Spotlight. Because Malfatto's mask is based on the Plague mask I had to do some chopping and sticking and making sure it fit properly on Matthew's face before I proceeded.

I used Air dry clay to build the mask up. In order to give it something to stick to (the plastic from the mask isn't that great of a surface), I laid down strips of just regular masking tape. I also used the tape to build the nose shape.

Once I had the foundation (the armature) down I then started applying the air dry clay. I used Jovi brand, because that's what the shop had, but you can probably use any type of reasonable quality air dry clay. Why air dry clay? Because it dries relatively light, and doesn't require baking and is easy to work with. You need to build it up in small layers so it can dry decently in between. If you just chuck a big blob on it will probably crack as it dries and be a nightmare to work with. So, less is more and it's easier to work with. Obviously, being air dry, work on one section at a time

I ordered some Welding goggles on ebay. The problem is I didn't know if I was going to get them in time and they had to be shipped from the US. Because of our workplace regulations they're not actually appropriate to use here :/ Anyway, that's why you'll notice that I had to cut the eye holes AFTER I started building it up. I used a Dremel to do it, with the sander thingy and went bit by bit. Tip: wear a mask and goggles. That shit is bad to breathe in and it really gets in your eyes. It was kinda lucky that it was ME putting the mask together and not Matthew because he would have totally put the eyes in derpy He would've sat them flush with the surface. Tip: Don't do this! You won't be able to see and you'll look pretty stupid. You need to have them facing forward which will mean building up the sides We super-glued the goggle frames in for extra security. Tip: Do this well before you're going to wear it. Poor Matt was breathing in fumes In the pic you can't see the lenses. I didn't pop them in until I was happy where they wanted to go. Problem is, then it's really hard to get them in and I had to undo all the tape anyway So, put the lenses in, just don't get them filthy.

Forgot to mention the nose bridge. By this point I had to start getting ready so I made Matt build the nose bridge. He moulded it out of some air dry clay and painted it with regular acrylic paint.

I lightly sanded over the whole surface to even it all out. I was literally working until the last minute so my sanding job wasn't the greatest and I didn't have time to Gesso it, which would have evened it out a little. Oh well. I then carved across the nose bridge and the little mouth, which you can't see in the pic because this was REALLY done at the last minute and we didn't have time for a pic. The mouth could have been a bit bigger but meh.

For detail (anyone that knows me knows how much I love detail) I used leather ties to attach the mask to Matt's head. Be careful when tightening the straps because uh, they can snap :/ Yeah, I sort of snapped one a bit short at the con, but thankfully still had enough to use. PHEW! You will have to readjust the mask throughout the day because the leather stretches a little. I just used regular leather cord for necklaces etc. Make sure you tie good knots.

And voila! There ya go! Here [link] is the finished close up on the mask worn by Matthew, though you can go here [link] to see another pic too.
