Part 1 of 6: The Original Twelve in the N64!

The road to celebrate Smash Ultimate's release in three days, going to start off with the original starters and unlockables! For each poster, I'm going to ranting all the fighters who appeared in the Super Smash Bros series!

 Mario:

Who can one expect to see Mario in a fighting game, especially a game created by Nintendo. If I was born in the late '90s and have a Delorean to go back in time to watch that very first reveal trailer of Smash Bros for the N64, I want to relive the peaceful and funny moments of that trailer featuring Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Pikachu. Started off as the gang walking peacefully in the grassy meadows, until Mario decided to go rouge by tripping his pal, Yoshi to the ground. Kinda strange to see Mario, a whimsical go-happy plumber to go mad in one video game's friendly company, but of course it's not a big deal, I just find it funny. Of course in later years, I like how Cappy appears in Mario's Super Jump Punch (Up B) and his side taunt, just to give that Odessey nostalgia.

 Donkey Kong:

Of course, I couldn't forget about Donkey Kong. He was definitely an interesting choice to be on the roster, especially he was in the N64 commercial. During the '90s, Nintendo was going crazy with all their classic game series shifting to the 3D world and they released many great 3D games like Super Mario 64, Pokemon Stadium, Star Fox 64, and the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. However, there was another game that turned an antagonist to a protagonist in his own game. That my friend was Donkey Kong Country. Do y'all know the lyrics to the DK Rap? (Yeah... sorry I asked...)

 Link:

I never played a single Legend of Zelda game in my life, but Link was a big deal to be in Smash. Just like with Mario, the Legend of Zelda series has been one of Nintendo's biggest game series-tying with the plumber himself. During the '90s, the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was one of the best-selling games at the time and to me now, the best Zelda game in my opinion.  (Of course by someone who hasn't played a single Zelda game) With Ocarina of Time blowing the sales, what better way to represent the Zelda series more by adding one of their own characters in a crossover between Mario and Pokemon. Of course, the elf boy who breaks pots and screams constantly, Link. Fun fact, Link is the first of the original starters to have their appearance changed. From the N64-Melee, Link's appearance is based on his look in the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. From Brawl-3DS & Wii U, his appearance is based on his design from the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which is a cool design for Link but not really my taste since I favor his OOT design more. Of course in Ultimate, Link's new and current design is based on his appearance in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which ruled out the favoritism of my favorite Link design. Speaking of Breath of the Wild, can we see a new trailer or gameplay of the sequel Aonuma-san?

 Samus:
Like with the Zelda series, I never played a single Metroid game, might buy Metroid Dread on Christmas. I never know Samus was until I played Brawl. However, her design is somewhat unique but of course, I like her current design based on her Varia Suit from well all the Metroid games. Quick fact about Samus is that she is the second of the starter roster to have their design changed in Smash. In terms of playing her, she's very fun to play in Ultimate.

 Yoshi:
Yoshi was kind of an odd ball to be included in the roster. I mean it's just another Mario character in the game, but I think Yoshi wants revenge on Mario for tripping him in front of Pikachu and Donkey Kong or for dropping his ancestors at the pits in World 1 in Super Mario World. Strange to see Yoshi has his own series emblem despite originating in Super Mario World, but of course Yoshi got more recognition with the release of Yoshi's Island on the SNES. That's fine and I mean they did the same thing to Donkey Kong so, it all makes sense.

 Kirby:
To think to have a pink puffball like Kirby in a fighting game is really strange right? Nah, you see what this demon can do. Since Masahiro Sakurai is the lead developer of the game, of course he wants to add his characters to be part of the roster. What character to be more gullible and popular like his son, Kirby! I played a lot of Kirby Super Star Ultra on my Nintendo DS and just remember how fun it was to play in the levels. The mini games were pretty fun but the King Dedede arc and boss fight arc was definitely one of my favorite highlights in the game.

  Fox:
Unlike the Zelda series, I did play a little bit of Star Fox 3D on the Nintendo 3DS, but I never finish it because I don't know it kind of lose my interest. Of course, with Smash, I know Fox more in Smash than his own home series. Like Link, Fox is the third of the original starters to have their design changed. His first appearance in the N64, is based on his appearance in Star Fox 64 for the N64. In Melee, his design looks like it was based on his appearence in Star Fox Command. In Brawl and 3DS & Wii U, his design is based on his appearence in Star Fox Assault. In Ultimate, his design is based on Star Fox Zero and Starlink: Battle for Atlas. Another fun fact is that Fox is the first Smash fighter to have different voice lines and voice actors through out the series.

 Pikachu:
What can tie in with Mario and Zelda together, if you say Pokemon, then you're absolutely right. Pokemon is one of Nintendo's most popular series along with Mario, maybe even popular then Disney's Mickey Mouse. For a Pokemon character to be in Smash, there many choices to choose which one would fit the theme of a starter character. Starters like Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Eevee or Pikachu. Well out of the five, it was an easy choice for Sakurai and the team to pick. They chose Char- Pikachu. Pikachu was an obvious pick as a starter for Smash 64. With his popularity from the Pokemon Anime and being a somewhat powerful Pokemon in Gold and Silver in Red's team, Pikachu was basically everyone's go to main. However, as the Meta of Smash keeps growing, some despise Pikachu due to his playstyle like some want him to get nerf in Ultimate, but of course that didn't happen in the patches at all in Ultimate. Besides gameplay and arguments of others, Pikachu is definitely one of my Smash fighters to play and one of the best inclusions in the series.

 Luigi:
I'm afraid our favorite green plumber is still hiding over his brother's shadow since he appeared as a secret character. But of course who can't forget about Luigi since his brother is in the roster, and I like Luigi fits the role of secret or unlockable characters. Nuff' said.

 Ness:
Never played Earthbound or the Mother series, but I got to know Ness from Brawl and of course from my friends who played Earthbound. To fill in the secret character slots, there were many characters to fill in since we already got Luigi. Guests characters like Diddy Kong, Ganondorf, or Zelda. Well they decided to save those three for later, and come up with a boy from Onett. I honestly wish Ninten was an Echo fighter for Ness...

 Captain Falcon:
Whether you played F-Zero, F-Zero X, both, or neither, I think your hype levels would be different with Captain Falcon in Smash. When you unlock Ness, you might be thinking "Who's this kid? He looks ridiculous." However when you unlock Captain Falcon, our reactions would be like "YES!" This guy is awesome. He's got the moves. He's got the Falcon Punch and Falcon Kick. Smash Bros has done so much for Captain Falcon's personality that he can pretty much be a Smash Bros original character, not an F-Zero character. Let me tell you, he's one hyped Smash character.

 Jigglypuff:
Jigglypuff probably was one of the most well-known Smash characters at the time of the N64's release. At the time of Pokemania, Jigglypuff was probably one of the more prominent Pokemon in the anime and because of that was more familiar to parents and their children. However, in terms of pleasing Smash Bros crowd, they were way cooler Pokemon be included besides Jigglypuff like Charizard, Blastoise, or Mewtwo (Of course, besides Blastoise, both Charizard and Mewtwo would come later on in the Smash series). I feel like they were only two reasons that Nintendo and Sakurai chose Jigglypuff: 1) Her recognizability in the anime and 2) More importantly, the dev team could use Kirby as a base to shorten the creation process.
