Oh I love sketches! It's one of my favourite kinds of art. I often prefer initial sketches to the finished product, which might sounds weird, but they give me a sense of freedom and lightness of spirit which I like.

try overlaying colours on a new layer set to soft light. Overlay works as well but the colours go a bit off. I use soft light to blend and multiply to go darker then i merge everything and paint direct and make new overlays when its needed

also if you're doing values before you put colours try not to use pure black or white if you are going to overlay colours over hope this helps
