Description This is an earlier sculpt I did when I first started Blue Sky. It's for the movie "Horton Hears a Who"

It was one of my first character sculpts on my first film ever...was very exciting and still is!!

About 8" tall. This character is one 5 of the council members in the movie.

More to come in the near future!

You never cease to amaze me. I've been watching your work since 2005, starting with "HashiHimeMaquette" and I can only say I would kill to have the talent you have. Especially since, I've been wanting a statuette of a character from my new favorite video game - Dragon Age 2- but they don't make them (at least not that I can find). Any chance you take on commissions??

I watched this movie. Must be very cool to participate of the development of character design of an animation movie. This creation is a reproduction of a sketch of other designer, or the concept of this character is yours? There's some new project on the way? Great work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MumboJumbo In reply to Degasperi [2010-06-20 18:36:59 +0000 UTC]

Hey Degasperi! It's definitely fun to be a part of character development Though sometimes it changes a bit from the development to when it's on the big screen. This creation was drawn by an artist in the design department, then given to me to make in the 3d realm We are currently working on the movie "RIO" you can find the trailer here: [link] and then on to Ice Age 4! Keep an eye out for both

Degasperi In reply to MumboJumbo [2010-06-22 01:39:47 +0000 UTC]

The trailer was very cool. The Christ the Redeemer statue was perfect. Wich characters did you work? Did you modeled a statue of the toucan? It seems to be a very funny character. The guys of the development department had to come here in Brazil to compose the backgrounds of the animation, or everything was made through photos on the studio in USA?
Congratulations on your work and I wish you success in this new project.

Well done! His pose is very... well.. superior. Great job at mimicking that. As far as the clay you used, is that Super Sculpey hard enough to retain details without accidentally undoing them? I've used some Sculpeys in the past but now prefer plastalina instead because of it's extremely hard nature. Also, is Sculpey something you see often when sculpting for movies?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MumboJumbo In reply to Athrial [2010-06-06 17:13:16 +0000 UTC]

Hey Hey Athrial! Thanks so much for your kind comment All of the council members thought of themselves as superior, they were jerks in the movie Was fun sculpting such a pompous pose! I use super sculpey gray (gray compound) that I buy from Compleat sculptor www.sculpt.com I hear super sculpey isn't as good as chavant because of it's rubbery nature/hard to retain details...but since I started with Sculpey, I don't know the difference. (I've never ventured out to try chavant or WED clay). At Blue Sky we use super sculpey soley because you can bake it..that way we don't have to spend money on moulding/casting every one of our sculpts But I know some movie companies use Chavant or other oil based clays and just keep them in cases to protect them. Hope that answers your question! Thanks for stopping by!

Athrial In reply to MumboJumbo [2010-06-07 05:59:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh, definitely! Thanks! I'm really interested in sculpting for movie concepts as well as the recent fad of Vinyl/Designer Toys. I'll make sure to check super sculpey out cuz, yeah, you do have to make a mold and cast chavant when using it, but that is kinda what I do so I got used to it. Still, I have some unfinished pieces still in clay on my shelf... Anyways, thanks so much for the info and site (I've been referred to sculpt.com a couple times now). Oh, and I checked out your husband's page too. Great work! You can expect more compliments and constructive criticism from me in the future!!!

haha Well, I tend to keep myself busy as much as I can, even with working for Blue Sky...I find if I don't keep busy, I feel like I'm not productive. It's hard to find time, but I'm slowly getting my personal projects finished! Thanks for the comment and for stopping by!

Oh, I know what you mean. I've slowed a lot since I got out of school, and it's hard to keep working on new things for my demo reel. If I don't keep busy, my mind wanders all over the place and over loads me with noise pollution.
