(Thank you cinnamonyokai for making me aware of this beta Pokémon’s existence and sending me down a rabbit hole

Soooo there was apparently a beta Pokémon from extremely early stages in Gold and Silver’s development that was just a fox with no body, just t a i l .

And I want it.

I want it so, SO bad.

Apparently, it’s theorized that this Pokémon was redesigned to become Furret.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME, YOU TOOK AWAY MY FOX AND TURNED IT INTO A FERRET???? THIS IS HERESY AGAINST FOX SUPREMACY!!!11!1

Okay, joking aside, I really wish they kept this design. Analyzing the original design, I feel this Pokémon was likely inspired by Kudagitsune, small, serpentine fox Yōkai that lived in pipes. It would have been SO COOL to have a Kudagitsune Pokémon…but they went and turned it into a ferret. Huh.

Unrelated, but in the same beta, there was also a Fire fox Pokémon that strongly resembles Fennekin. It’s very likely that that design was repurposed into the Fenn, so I’m happy Gamefreak at least revisited that concept.
