Description Oh look, another alien character that I am totally overly fond of. Tars Tarkas from A Princess of Mars and all the other Barsoom novels. (Kind of old news picture and rant here.)

Contrary to what seems like most of the world, I really enjoyed the John Carter film. Alright, it didn't exactly follow the books overly closely...nor do I think it was a film that will live on into the great annuls of film history. HOWEVER, the film DID get a total shaft because of a total cock-up of marketing and the fact people don't know the classics. The trailers were utter garbage and I can see why people thought of the film as an AVATAR (the stupid bloo people one) rip-off. This thought also grossly disgusts me because as a person in the know, I realize that so much of today's sci-fi genre relies on the ground work set down by these novels. John Carter was the super man before Superman. He was the star warrior before Star Wars. I think what happened with this film was a tragedy, pure and simple. Granted, E. R. Burroughs style or writing/plots are not completely in tune with the current fashion, but they are part of the firmest foundations and people should recognize and laud them for that. Know your roots oh nerds and geeks of today, they lie in the pulp action/science fiction of yesteryear. Do your genre's genealogy and in doing so, better understand and appreciate it.

One thing that this movie got TOTALLY AND PERFECTLY RIGHT in my opinion? TARS effing TARKAS. I was happiest in that theatre when Tars was on the screen. Willem Dafoe...you are so amazing.

------------------
John Carter, all his Barsoomian adventures and Tars Tarkas belong to Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Willem Dafoe brings Tars to glorious life in the film.

The tharks were absolutely outstanding. I always had trouble picturing them when I read the series and what designs I had seen previously were ok but never particularly thrilled me. This film? I LOVE THEM. LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM.

Thank you very much for the fave!

I watched that movie on a whim while on a transatlantic flight and it surprised me how much I enjoyed it. Wish more people watched it.

It seems like that is how most people saw the movie: On accident but then they liked it. It just proves the power of marketing. I wish more people had seen it too and now that the DVD is out, I am spreading the thing among my friends.

Let us join our metals and conquer the unwitting masses, preaching the glorious exploits of the Warlord of Mars!

;_; I swear, people that actually watch the film mostly seem to like it. It bothers me so very much that they just didn't go see it!
