I've had a male and female betta in together before and they lived happily for 3 years. All depends on the fishes personality! They can be nasty little things though! This guy is sweet and even shared an algae disc with my snail [link]

Yes they do, their real name is "Japanese Fighting Fish" or "Siamese Fighting Fish"
