Description This is an illustration to "Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin" in "Unfinished Tales".

I tried to draw the Lord of Waters as close to the text as I could.

Oooh very good picture, I love this book and I'm so happy to see an illustration of it

Earlier I also wanted to draw Ulmo but I forgot it

I think your Ulmo is my favorite. I've seen so many where he just looks like some strange man-like sea creature. Here he's got enough strange majesty without looking...really bizarre.

Thank you for your nice comment. I just tried to express my impressions of Tolkien's text, and they had nothing to do with sea monsters or Poseidon-like sea gods.

He's very powerful looking! I'm glad that you don't have him looking like a bearded
Neptune; I've seen a lot of those! The Valar are supposed to look fair and majestic
and your Ulmo certainly is.

I hope you plan on doing Mandos and Nienna as well.( Hint

I'm much pleased with your appreciation of my effort!

It seems that it'll take some time before I am able to draw(or redraw) something tolkienesque again... Maybe in a month , or so, we'll see then.

Oh, I did a watercolour painting of Ulmo as well nearly 20 years ago and this reminds me of it! Great job on the water and the light that the Vala emanates.. it really does justice to the book!

I never learned draw sea and waves on it properly, and since I've seen the Baltic Sea this summer , I feel ashamed of this picture (or rater of my conventional rendering of waves and foam).

It is the fourth variant of the scene, and I kept redrawing it, because I was not satisfied with Ulmo. But at last I managed to make the Vala to look not like some bearded Neptune with trident. I wanted to be as close to the text as possible, and to show Ulmo as described in "Unfinished Tales", with helmlike crown, green kirtle flickering with seafire and scaly silver armour... and his seashell horns , of course.

I like the waves here for some reason.. not because they would be realistic, but because of their pattern-like character. It seems so appropriate.. also, because it reminded me of my own old attempts at depicting this scene. (And f I recall correctly, my Ulmo definitely did look too much like Neptune.. )
